My hunt for Biblical tv shows still continues and along the line, I came across a show called Midnight, Texas that aired from 2017 to 2018. It was canceled by the second season and to be honest, I'm not feeling like I'll be missing much.
I only saw the first season and while it has some perks, it's mostly a poorly made show with untapped potential.
The story goes like this -
Midnight is a small town in Texas where people who feel like hiding from the world find their safe haven. Also all the freaks of natures—vampires, weretigers, succubus, witches and so on gather in Midnight as well. They feel an uncomparable, unexplainable attraction towards the place. We later know it's because the veil between our world and hell is very thin there. Which all fine and dandy but this time a powerful demon is about to unveil the portal and come out in our world. While it plots its arrival, all the supernaturals grow restless, agitated and they are on the verge of collapsing thanks to the demon's demonic will. Only one man, who is a psychic can seal the veil and he's a runner.
Yes, the traditional Hero's Journey formula all over again. Which by itself isn't all that bad as I've said before but oh boy, the showrunners, in this case, can't dramatize or take advantage of potential thrilling scenes — making it very predictable and not so much fun.
For example, a small town usually has a tight-knitted community that doesn't accept new-comers that easily. The common trope would be placing a test in front of the newcomer to prove their value. The way the folk of Midnight warmed up to the newcomer and protagonist psychic Manfred is not coherent.
It's bad with romances too. The way Creek, the town waitress, jumped Manfred at the very beginning, their coupling felt way too forced. I actually thought creek could be a succubus or a nymphomaniac and there's some sick mystery to her. Turned out its just plain romance. Bleh!
For the entirety of the show, I was constantly facing pacing issues, lack of proper build-up and dramatization, and inconsistent scene transitions. I felt like they weren't even trying! The concept is cool, it would turn out to be a really entertaining show in the right hands.
Alright, alright, I'm probably too hard on it. I actually like their portrayal of an angel and its wings. Very realistic. What I didn't like is that the character who plays an angel feels like a very confused wrestler who's questioning his life choices.
I liked the vampire and the hitwoman couple. Their story had some nicer moments. I also liked the actresses who play the witch and mandfreds grandma.
I will probably see the second season too but honestly, I'm not too excited about it. The good news is, Attack on Titan season 4 is airing. There's also The Mandalorian and Young Sheldon. My TV schedule ain't all that bad!
