I had just finished my junior secondary school exam and I had to sit at home for at least 3 months to await result of the exam, which will see me entering into high school. After the exam, most parents won't want their children lying around at home, (wasting time) as they will call it. So in order to make their stay at home worth a while, they had sent their sons and daughters to go learn a skill or a trade.
Many went ahead to learn different set of skills and trades. Most girls went to learn hairdressing, tailoring, make up and beed making. These kinds of skills is very common among girls in my country - justifiably, my area. It is so common that you see 1 of 3 of the population of girls in the country learning trade being focused on these areas. This makes me wonder at times that there would be a day that these things will be of little or no value as before. For the boys, it is more of tailoring and barbing - speaking in the angle of the locals. But it isn't as much as that of the ladies.
I had stayed at home for one and half month with absolutely nothing to do until a neighbor of ours suggested to my mother to take me to a computer college to learn some computing skills there since I am always the one fixing their phones and laptop problems for them, even without being taught anything concerning such (software part only). My mom agreed. I mean, that woman will do anything for me as long as it relates to education or my future. And when I arrived at the computer college, Beetos Computer College to be precise, and I got enrolled, I was already one and half month behind the other students I met there. And they were having test/exam on the Friday of that week, which was four days from my registration.
I had never been taught anything about computers before but I can operate one and do all manner of software settings or operations. All I just do is follow the instructions or understand the English language that was written below the icons or better still, I just understand the icons themselves and what it meant. I was told I will do the test as well. Though they assured me I wasn't getting penalized for scoring way below since I just joined which makes sense. And for the four days, lectures kicked in and I did grab faster on first narration before anyone else. All questions thrown was answered by me. Makes it looked more like I was a computer guru once and like I was full of pride.
After the exam, the results came out and I got 10 out of 10. The second highest came up with 4 over 10 and this shocked the whole building. Funny thing about it all was I never did any study on the topics I had missed. I just asked questions in class that relates to them and I got an excellent result. From then, I began to really let out my intelligence.
After the course, which was Desktop Publishing where we learnt Microsoft word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Adobe Page Maker, PowerPoint, Corel Draw and more, I was offered a job to teach there but I declined. Majorly because I had to go back to school. This was my first journey to the computer/digital world.
