Two photos.
One location.
One subject.
One camera.
(A crappy camera)
Some time ago - what now seems like a long, long time ago before quarantine and coronavirus filled our lives - I was out in the nearby State Park for a hike, which is where this photo was taken. There was nothing particularly striking about the photo, the subject, or even the reason for taking the photo other than I was using one of my "crappy cameras" (a digital camera with a sensor size of less than 2 megapixels). It looked like it might be a fun landscape, at the time, so I snapped it. The interesting thing about this particular camera is that it doesn't have a viewfinder, and the LCD on it is essentially useless, meaning I need to literally eyeball the photo and hope it works.
When I got home I subject the photo to a small series of colour correction enhancements to make what would have been an ugly grey blur an actual image, and it turned out pretty good: the sky is blue, the trees frame the playground set, and one might imagine some fairies beginning to wake up from a long winter slumber to go accost some poor child looking to burn off some energy.
I wasn't terribly happy with the picture, though. It just didn't pop. So I went back to the drawing board and sent it through a different set of enhancements, but this time focussed on contrast instead of colour and put it through a black and white treatment.
I like the second result much more than the first. It has more character to it. It's not just a bland, boring picture of a playground; instead it's a menacing, scary image where zombies and clowns lurk behind every tree. Even the sky looks angry, ready to punish any who have done it ill with a swift, firm lightning bolt of evil justice.
Yes, that's what I like about it.
The moral of this story, boys and girls, is that yes, post processing matters, and it can ruin, or make, an otherwise boring picture into something better.
