Fort DuPont is was an old army fort that was one of the three forts in the "Harbour Defence" system in charge of defending the Delaware, Wilmington, Chester, and Philadelphia. It's sister forts were Fort Delaware, which is now a Delaware State Park, and Fort Mott across the river in New Jersey. Of the three only Fort Delaware remains standing; Fort Mott is really just grass as this point, while Fort Dupont has a few ruins.
This is a picture of Fort Delaware, on Pea Patch Island, in the Delaware River, as seen from the shore of Fort Dupont.
Fort Dupont now isn't much more than some ruins and a park. But it's some really awesome ruins! And it's a really awesome place to visit with a crappy digital camera and a digital pinhole to get some really old effects.
From here forward, all pictures are taken either with my Sony FD-75 floppy-disk base digital camera, or my Sony a58 with analogue pinhole lens, for effect of "old, abandoned, and arguably forgotten".
And there are ruined buildings! I'm not entirely sure what this would have been, but I got to climb around it.
And this old abandoned furnace was pretty cool too. The chimney was huge!
There is a walking path that follows what would have been the fort at one point, though the vast majority of the land now has seen the buildings destroyed and trees growing over it. There was, however, this part of the fort which was pretty awesome. This would have been the inside; for some perspective, I was standing in what would have been the courtyard.
This will be an ideal spot to bring people for some portraits.
Fort Dupont was on the mainland, as opposed to Fort Delaware, which was on an island in the river. As such, it had a support structure and small town built up around it. Now it's mostly just some old abandoned buildings, but still very awesome looking. I mean, who doesn't like old abandoned buildings, right?
This old guard tower I found really fascinating. It wasn't cordoned off and the stairs to get to the top looked to be in decent shape; I could have climbed up if I had wanted to, but I was already beginning to run late, so I did not. I do want to go back and try though.
And some final shows as I was beginning to head back to the car after a few hours of walking about.
