If you don’t get out and try something, how would you know if it were good or bad? Hive has seriously inspired my to constantly explore, try new things, new places and new recipes #ilovebaking!!!
So when my Mom said we had to go to the Fynbos Restaurant on the Main Road in town I was super keen to check it out. She’s raved about it for years and has multiple visits every time we holiday in this sleepy little town.
And now I know why.
The Fynbos Restaurant is named after our indigenous fine bush of the Western Cape. It’s a name that all South Africans would recognise, but in my mind it is possibly misplaced considering the very French provincial inspired style of the restaurant. Maybe they’re trying to play off the fine detail of the French Provincial theme verses the fine leaves and flowers of our fynbos plants.
From the outside you see one of the old stone buildings typical of Mossel Bay but with the addition of a lovely conservatory in the front garden.
As we enter the old front door we walk through an anti room filled with porcelain style figurines and chachkies.
This room opens up to the main dining hall of the restaurant and it just feels wonderful to walk into this space. It’s light and bright with old school electric pendants well placed and hanging from the wooden beams of the high ceiling.
We were placed at a table for 6 in the conservatory section in the front with beautiful light and a view of the rose garden outside.
It was actually my husband birthday so we were planning on tea and cake all round to celebrate.
The menu was quite South Africa with Babotie and Tomato Bredie (stew) on the menu, but it also included all the regular small restaurant staples of toasted sandwiches, soup of the day, sweet or savoury pancakes and of course a fantastic cake selection.
My mom had called ahead to make sure they kept some Mozart cake aside. So when we ordered they made sure to check that she was the lady that had called. So typical of my mom. I was actually quite surprised that she didn’t ask to change tables because in almost every restaurant we visit she always asks to move to another table. But this time she was happy (hallelujah!!!).
Our orders were quite simple with teas, coffees and either Mozart Cake or Pancakes.
Now Mozart Cake is a special finely layered cake made up of thin layers of meringue alternating with layers of hazelnut cream and usually includes finely grated milk chocolate and crushed hazelnuts. It’s my Mom’s favourite so of course my dad and Grant aka followed suit.
The kids and I were pumped to have sweet pancakes - 2 Nutella Chocolate Pancakes and I opted for the Banana Caramel pancake with ice cream.
This place really does not disappoint. We loved every minute of it and left planning to come back for scones and the apple pancakes, or maybe lunch, or maybe the soup of the day. I can see why my mom loves it so much. Every part of it is just pleasant and pretty.
As we left the main dining room we explored the store spread across the rooms on the other side of the entrance hall. They have some sweet things and some things that are probably useful but that I’d forget about, like an avocado saver, or the microwave bacon tray. I did love the printed green leaf cushions but my house is currently overflowing with cushions!
Tomorrow we will be back and I already know what I’ll be having. The prices are extremely reasonable, the service good, and well, the decor speaks for itself. I don’t think I need an excuse to visit this charming little piece of yummy in the middle of the very small town of Mossel Bay.
You’ve done good folks! You’ve done good!
