For the first time we have grown our own bananas that were good enough to actually eat instead of feeding them to the chickens and cow! Ha! We planted some banana plants a few years ago and harvested them recently and they are great!!
Did you know that a banana plant will only produce one time? After it grows the batch of bananas, it won't grow anymore, so you chop it down and leave it as fertilizer on the other pups that have likely grown up around it!
We planted a few varieties of plants in our backyard - blue, red, nino, and I forget what else! It will be great when they start producing, but for now, we are just getting a few batches of regular bananas.
Our kids love it when we have bananas. They will literally each eat about three a day, so we need at least 18 a day to meet that need! It is a lot of bananas, but thankfully when our trees produce, they're free!
The good thing about these bananas is they are taller than our weeds and grass! Ha! The back lot is overrun with weeds, as you can see!!
I also like that it doesn't take them too long to go from super green to yellow, but it sure is crazy when they all start turning yellow at one time! I am never lacking brown bananas for banana bread, that's for sure!
I also use the peels. I either chop them up and feed them to the chickens, feed them whole to the cow, or put them in water to make banana water to water my plants with. I read recently it may not be very beneficial, but my plants do seem to like that kind of water, so I keep doing it! Especially since we get so many peels in one day!
.
It is a good thing we love bananas around here! We are hoping that soon our little homestead will provide us with all the bananas we need and we won't have to buy any!
Do you like bananas? Do you grow them?
