Homesteading and Hive Friends!
We have been back in Guardia Sanframondi, showing our magnificent Arthouse to an interested party, who came from Amsterdam to view it - and to get a taste of the town...
Talking of tasting the town, and I have been busy (and slowly, happily, lazily) picking the season's bounty from near our old home. All that we have picked, which you see in these photos, is free food that is growing on land that is not ours, but which is not being tended to - and thus is reverted back under Natural Law. I.e. the fruits of these plants and trees are the harvest for whomever needs and wants them.
A lot of modern folks might labour under the misconceptions of a lower law than Natural Law, which presumes that 'ownership' (on paper) means a hard boundary and possession... That anyone 'trespassing' or 'stealing' fruit or veggies from a piece of land that is not 'theirs' (i.e. certified on paper) is 'wrong'. However this is neither True, Law-full nor Correct.
When a piece of land is fallow, or released from maintenance, or not being tended to in a regular way - perhaps especially if fruits are not being harvested - Nature will return and grow, feed, live naturally on that land.
If we see ourselves as separate from Nature, then this would (naturally) exclude us from having the Right to enjoy these fruits alongside other Natural Beings who are living on this land (without the interference of an 'owner'). Foraging like this from effectively abandoned gardens, is similar to the using of abandoned buildings (called squatting), though it is a higher and a less complicated Law.
We are also (even more!) blessed to have both good relations with current 'owners' (on paper) and/ or to have had past rapport with the specific land and trees, plants and elements that are active on the surrounding plots.
All of this, as well as possessing a strong connectedness and presence in relation to this area, AND Living In Gift rather than working for wage or profit under commercial law, gives us profoundly more Right to take what is there, for our benefit and nourishment. 🙏🤗💝🪷
This is our payment from the Universe, for living righteously.
And we are very well paid, as one can be when one turns to Nature and to wild food, rather than accepting the inferior and extremely costly alternative of food from 'Big Agra'.
This week we harvested our first proper bunches of asparagi, multiple agrumi (mandarines, oranges, grapefruits, lemons!), loads of greens (chard, borage, nettles), wild leeks, marigold (calendula) flowers...
And a whole Food Forest In Miniature: a large bucket of cuttings from the many fruit, nut and herb trees. If I remember correctly, we cut twigs of; lemon, grapefruit, black and white mulberries, oranges, plums, apricots, hazelnuts, capers. A great assortment of twigs, which may potentially become trees on our land in the years to come - if our prayers over them and our fertile soil are sufficient! (I cut only pieces which will not flourish on the tree.)
Again, we feel blessed, as we think of packing up our wee car again, and heading for the hills - back to our sovereign homestead in Molise. It is most exciting to be filling the car with produce and potential like this!
