Poultry mostly chickens are farmed in great numbers. More than 60 billion chickens are killed for consumption annually.Chickens raised for eggs are known as layers, while chickens raised for meat are called broilers.
Poultry farming is a very good business, it has helped to reduce the pangs of hunger and poverty in many communities and some African countries. Food is one of the basic necessities of life, poultry has provided this.
White meat which includes chicken, turkey, fish, etc are very beneficial to the body.
White meats are rich in vitamins B3 and B12 for brain function and blood health. Vitamin D is present in chicken, this helps in calcium absorption. White meats are generally low in fat and this helps the heart to function well. White meats are sometimes recommended for people in their late 40s to 50s.
Poultry sells well during the festive periods like Christmas and new year, Easther, and so on. This is a very reliable source of income. Most people in some African countries eats white meats (turkey, chicken) for luxuries. They are used to celebrate birthdays, wedding ceremonies and anniversaries. Many restaurants also sells spiced white meats.
I have a little poultry in my compound, where I rare three ducks, a few chicken and a few turkey. I am raring these mostly for consumption but I sell some once in a while.
