It started yesterday morning at 6:40am and continued until 1pm. The remnants of the storm had made their way north and the sound and smell f the rain was absolutely magnificent. It had been weeks since the last rains at the beginning of July and we needed them more than ever now to help quench the fires.
By 8:20am we had .25" of rain already but there was zero water running across the farm as it all was soaking in right away.
While it rained mid day I headed out to take care of the harvests. The cucumbers had 28 for me but a bunch were wonky and not saleable. The squash had a solid 17 pounds ready for me which I had not expected given how far down I picked the prior day.
The rain killed my amaranth. They all snapped at mid height and they had not filled out their seeds yet. I piled a bunch by the fence but I will have to toss them all to the animals today. I think the birds will like the tops as well.
The road is closed now that we are level 1 evac zone but we have free access to our road. There are a few check points that the sheriffs are checking ids to ensure only those who live here are allowed in.
The rains had largely stopped by this point and I heard a plane coming over and initially I thought it was a fire boss but it did not have the pontoons on the bottom. Similar plane but not one of them.
I also checked the creek as I went by and saw that it had not raised even a tiny bit with all the rain, more proof that it all soaked in and none of it ran off as the fire went right over the upper part of our creek, miles upstream.
The tomatoes had 4 pounds for me and the peppers had 2 pounds. We have enough tomatoes now to process them.
The day had stayed nice and cool so I took the opportunity in the afternoon to finally make another batch of tortillas. With it so hot during the days I have not wanted to heat up the house by making them so yesterday was perfect.
The boys have been asking for them so it was nice to be able to make a batch again. I have missed them.
Soaking was nice as the air was a bit chilly and the water nice and warm.
Today is nice and cool and hopefully another day of effective fire fighting. Woke up to fog this morning which has burned off now. I may take the boys to pick peaches this morning (not sure yet), I have harvests to do, and cleanup from the rains.
