On Saturday I went out about 11AM and started taking down the wire on the north side fences. The briars, multiflora roses, and grapevines had taken over up to, and in one case, completely engulfed, the fences.
I don’t know if I will be able to run animals again, but I am trying to maintain the fence lines. If we do get animals, it won’t be such a job to get them animal ready.
I’d gotten the top strand off and rolled up by the time my son got out to help. We soon had the other 2 off and rolled up. Then we tackled the heavy double strand (think barbed wire without the barbs). That made 2 enormous rolls and the job was done. We cleaned up and I went in for lunch. It had taken an hour and a half, more standing....
Tom arrived mid afternoon and was able to push the mess over the bank into the swamp. In places it was wide enough he could drive down with the bushhog.
Now I just need my son to keep it weed wacked so it doesn’t get so bad again...
Tom also did some more work on the wood area, mowing it low with the bushhog and then digging up stands of roots. The idea was to get it flat enough without pieces of logs or heavy roots to wreck my lawnmower when I mowed. It still needs to be raked over to get the pieces of log he couldn’t get. I hope my son will get it finished this week.
