On Friday it wasn’t a Chaos Friday. It was to be cold and cloudy so I was staying inside. My helper friend was here and he went out (the cold doesn’t seem to bother him) and harvested the celery and cleaned out the beds.
I had to wash all the dehydrator trays (18) and liners (36). The bubble sprayer on this faucet makes rinsing each one very quick.
I did that and then got set up to process celery into celery salt.
I’d asked him to do the rows on the east side of the garden first and to just fill the 2 big bowls I’d given him. The rows filled this one bowl so I got started picking it over and washing it.
The row on the west side of the garden under the apple tree hadn’t done as well and this was all that was worth saving.
This was the west side and the celery was on the right side of the dianthus. It’s pretty shaded in the afternoon.
Don’t those garlic rows look cozy for the winter? The garden is almost empty now, except for perennials.
From L - R: hollyhocks, Canterbury bells, feverfew, horehound
At the north end, L - R: parsley, quince, kale, parsnips, horseradish, comfrey, rhubarb
When he’d finished that, I asked him to start the New Herb garden cleanout. He got the stalks cut down in the echinacea purpurea bed.
He cleaned out the rest of the Tulsi basil and then tackled the tansy and wormwood in the back. That’s really all the stuff that needs taken out at this time. Once the deep cold hits there will be a lot more to cut down. There’s also weeding to do.
It took me an hour to do the trays and I rested from the standing. I started the celery but only managed another hour of standing before I had to quit. After lunch I took a 2 hour nap but was not up to any more standing.
So I put the celery in the cold pantry and filled the bowls with water. I will have to finish it Saturday morning.
The only thing left to process in the Big garden is the parsley. I hope to get to that next week.
