Greetings to my esteemed friends on the Homesteading community, it's nice visiting the community with my homesteading update. Have a nice time ahead, it's your friend saying hello all the way from Nigeria.
As a family we had a particular amount of money we save annually for the purchase of a landed property that belongs to the family. It's my dad's ideas to help unit the family and made sure everyone was part of the family business irrespective of your current occupation. That doesn't mean that one is to abandon his career for family business, but to have a homesteading business venture which our dad has been doing even before we were born.
Last year was very good for our family homesteading venture because we bought a new homesteading property that's larger than the old one. Like I said in my previous post that one of the homesteading venture practiced by my dad is oil palm tree nursery.
Since we're expanding by the day, we needed a larger plots of land to cultivate of already nursed oil palm seedlings. We currently have about 2,000 oil palm seedlings in our nursery and the earlier we transplant them the better for us. This is because most of the palm tree in our nursery have started entering the ground. Another reason is that we need the current nursery space to start a new oil palm nursery.
In July last year my dad had a call from a land agent that there was a farmhouse that was available for sale, so he went to survey the land and liked the space and the land in general and attested that the land is good for both plantations and animal husbandry.
The land is about 20 hectares of land and this will contain the following:
- oil palm plantation
- plantain plantation
- Poultry farm
- goat farm and probably a pig farm.
Oil Palm Plantation
Since we have up to 2,000 oil palm trees in our nursery, we have the intention to sell about half of the oil palm seedlings and then transplant the remaining half in our new homesteading property.
Plantain Plantation
We had already planted some plantain tree in the farmhouse and intends to plant more before the rainy season.
Poultry Farm
There's an intention to keep about 5k poultry birds in our planned poultry farm and expand as time goes by.
Goat Farm
I already have about 50 goats in my farm, once our homestead property is completely built, I'll increase the number of goats in my farm. The major purpose for keeping this goats is for meat, but after the completion of the farmhouse I'll introduce milking to the already existing one.
Finally, getting such a large land is capital intensive so completing the farm building will be a long term project, but we intend to do the work gradually not to go beyond our budget.
Thanks for stopping by my post.
Have a nice time ahead.
