Hello Everyone!
Sticking to new routines, Finding more seeds, The flower pot dilemma & Daydreaming about growing lots of food!
Alright, it is still rather early in the evening so I best get to spelling things out here... if I am going to stay on track with my new writing routine. Which has been (thus far) going pretty good... because I have been able to both make these entries and continue to plug away on that fictional story as well.
In the long run, I am angling towards getting into the habit of dedicating a few hours every day to each kind of writing... but with my main focus being on the fictional material. These entries are going to of course 'be whatever they are' (depending upon how my day goes) but with the other stuff I want to start treating it a wee bit more seriousness.
Not to get lost on that topic but having recently turned half a century... I had this realization that I needed to stop telling myself 'I will write that stuff later in life' and recognize that I have (at long last) arrived at that 'later' moment... that I have been telling myself about for decades! In other words, I have been looking forward to this period of my life for a very long time... and now I want to make of much of it as I humanly can.
Surprisingly enough, I have not been all that tempted to begin digging through all my 'rough draft' writings (that I churned out over the years) because my little brain is already bursting (at the proverbial seams) with ideas. That said though, the interwoven nature of those earlier writings... makes for quite the rich backdrop for my imagination to draw ideas from... and yup the current story that I have been working on is undoubtedly connected to it all.
Anyways, early in the day I dug through some stuff that I have in storage... and located a few more packets of seeds that I need to get planted as soon as possible. The packets themselves are not very large but I now have radishes, spaghetti winter squash and light kidney dry bean seeds... and whoa there are lots of the latter two types which is awesome.
After finding the seeds, I looked around for containers to plant them in to no avail... and I then racked my brain on the best way to make containers (as well as what to make them from) but could not make up my mind one way or another. Honestly, I let myself fizzle out on that project... after figuring out that I not only do I not have much to work with... the stuff that I do have (like the number ten cans and plastic jugs) are a frigging hassle to use as flower pots.
The true hassle there, is assuredly in converting the metal cans into flower pots... because the plastic jugs really are not that challenging at all with a good razor knife and stout scissors. The difficulty with using the plastic jugs, is the long-term mess that gets created when the plastic breaks down due to ultraviolet light from prolonged exposure to the sun.
I will undoubtedly need to figure something out that will work (sooner rather than later) because otherwise I will miss my 'seasonal window' for getting things planted in time. Once I get everything planted, I need to immediately pivot to expanding (or just rethinking) my rainwater collection/storage scenario and figure how to keep enough water on hand (for the plants) to cope with any droughts that might occur.
Although setting up some irrigation systems is an appealing idea, I want to avoid doing so... until I can store a substantial enough amount of water to make it worthwhile. For the most part, I have been picturing watering everything by hand this year and largely relying on the rain to do the bulk of the irrigating for me.
As far as my overall gardening endeavors go, I am probably doing better this year than I have in previous years... and a big part of that is due to the economic/financial pressure that I am under. Basically, just the idea of maybe growing (and being able to harvest) a fair amount of food... eases my stress a wee bit and if in the end I actually wind up with a good harvest of anything... I will be rather stoked.
Well, on that note I am going to call this entry 'good enough' and get it posted before the hour grows too much later. I hope that everyone is doing well. Ta ta for now.
