Today am so happy and I have to share my joy with you, Since I started getting involved in agriculture my joy is endless especially when it comes to harvest and the way my plants grow.
The joy of every farmer can be seen at the end of the season or harvest time, no farmer will be happy about a loss, death, or disease-affected plants. A person like me I frown very well on such and I don't wish for that on my fellow farmers.
As I was checking my agriculture plantation this morning, I sighted one of my vegetable plants (pumpkin leave) with a green color and healthy at the same time.
I planted this pumpkin two months ago when the rain was very active in falling and very heavy.
I used just seven seeds to plant but now what am seeing is making me feel extremely excited because at the end of the season I have going to have more seeds to spare and to plant.
It has started to yield seeds in good numbers as can be seen this morning.
This plant is scientifically known as Telfairia occidentalis but can be called fluted pumpkin in English and ikong Ubong or Ugu in Nigerian local dialects. It is a plant that grows mostly in the rainy season and in wet soil. It is a product of Cucurbitaceae plants. it is mostly cultivated and eaten by the people of the eastern part of Nigeria.
The plant is very easy to cultivate as it does not require much process. As we all know that every farmer clears his or her farm before planting the same is seen here too and after that, the ground is till and manure is added, as for me, I prefer natural manure from animal waste, and the seed is buried in the soil from there you watch out so you can prevent it from weeds and others unwanted plants beside it when it grows.
When crawling on the floor, it's advisable to stake it up with a stick with branches or bamboo to grow faster and healthy.
BENEFITS OF TELFAIRIA OCCIDENTALIS TO HUMANS.
As it has been known and verified that telfairia is the most eaten vegetable by humans means it has to do with the health of our body.
Pumpkin leave is rich in nutrients in all ramifications, when you talk of vitamins, minerals, and a lot more it is a balanced diet I must say.
It's can be eaten as soup with Eba or fufu.
It's not also left out in preparation of a diet-rich salad and can be used as a sauce to yam potatoes or garnish on rice.
The leaf is not selective as can be used and eaten with side effects.
Medical benefits of telfaira
The leaf extract is used to normalize blood pressure and prevent kidney stones and failure.
As I stated above that it contains vitamins and minerals and other important nutrients.
