Happy new month to us all, may the blessings and new tidings of the new month abide with us and may God give us peace and progress in the new month
It’s the first day of may and the raining seasons in which we often begin our farming exercise for the year. The month of March and April used to preparatory period where we clear the fields and prepare them for tillage . The rains often begin in the Month of April if we are lucky and it follows all through like that. It is usually often possible to plant the first sets of crops which are the corn and potatoes but this year the rain is already lingering and eating away our time. Even though we had the first downpour in the the month of April subsequent rain has been giving us so much gap that it’s impossible to plant anything yet. The ground seems to get dried up before another rain comes. We have prepared some portion of the farm while waiting for the next sets of activities.
Tillage of the ground is the next task but there is still a dilemma around it. No heavy duty tractor to help out and no laborer to help out either.
I also recently learnt that using heavy duty machine all the time to till the ground often disrupt the soil structures causing erosion, while farming we also must be aware of negative farming practice that may affectation land and pose any threat to the earth.
It is advisable now to till the land at least once in 3 farming season. The cultivated ridges can be used at least twice before the land can get turned over again.
In another vain I saw this portable tillage machine with a fellow homesteader Which he is using to till the ground. How I wish that I can own something like this around here. It’s a portable machine that any human can handle, it wil be easy to move this around in a truck as well. This will ease the lots of our stress with having to till the ground with hoes manually.
While we are yet waiting to till our fields here are some others who are bypassing the process and planting their crops directly on the ground.
Right here herbicides were applied to clear the weeds and corn has already been planted. They are about a week old and well germinated already. For this some heap of sand will be laid beneath the corn root as they grow up for their roots to be well covered. All that matters is for the forks root to penetrate into the ground and grow well. Making the ridges helps plant root to penetrate the soil well but this new idea isn’t bad and hopefully the corn will do just fine
This is the opening farm blog for the month of May and I wish us a successful farming journey this year. Meanwhile we are still hoping for how our land cultivation will be carried out and the needed weather and rain to fully commence this journey
