I had to take the weekend off from work today in order to tend to mine maize and cassava farm, it's been over a week since I last did any work of note on it. Though I do go into the garden a couple of times during the week to get vegetables for mine wife to make stew, but wasn't so much chance to work on the maize not to mention the cassava.
So as I woke up this morning, after our family quite time, brushing and face rinsing, I set into the garden to see what I can do there, as the maize is near harvest time.
I did some light weeding, it isn't bush much, only some few scanty unwanted growth here and there, this is because I sprayed the garden with chemicals earlier this month. I was done with the weeding within an hour. I couldn't harvest the maize in mass yet , because the first cub I pluck wasn't matured yet, so I leave it like that.
I was encouraged by mine cassava, it's flowers are green and it's growing well, once I harvest the maize in one to two weeks time, the cassava will have sufficient space, air, moisture and nutrients.
When I rounded up from the garden, I took mine bath and get set for other chores assigned for the weekend.
With the produce I will be harvesting from the garden, I believe mine family won't spend as much on food as we used to in past year. I am specially thankful to mine brother who raise the suggestion to me couple of months ago that I should use the vacant land in mine compound for light farming which would suppliment the family food..
If you have any vacant land in your compound too, don't let it waste away, use it, plant something there even if it's just some vegetables.
