I often write about the bright flowers in our garden, the wild birds singing in the trees, and the beautiful sunsets from our front porch. But today, I want to talk about a part of our backyard that I usually pass by. Let’s look at our chickens 🐔
We keep a few chickens around the house now. They are very helpful to us because they provide fresh eggs and good meat for our meals. Most of the time, they spend their days walking around the yard, scratching at the soil, and looking for tiny bugs to eat.
Our young chickens come in many different colors. Some have dark, glossy black feathers with pretty white speckles that look like stars. Others are a warm, golden-brown color mixed with bright white. It is fun to watch them walk together over the dry leaves and dirt. They always look very busy, tilting their heads down to peck at the ground.
While the young chickens get to roam freely, some of our chickes need a little extra care.
Our hen stays inside a safe bamboo cage. We do this to protect her and her precious eggs from predators that might try to sneak into the yard.
My brother has a strong rooster with a bright red comb. He keeps this rooster tied up carefully in his own spot. As you can see in the photos, he has a long, proud neck and likes to stand tall to watch over everything.
Taking these photos made me realize how lively our backyard really is. They may be simple farm birds, but they add so much color and life to our daily routine.
