If you ever had the impression that baseball is a boring game, you should have watched the Big Ten tournament championship game the other day. UCLA was facing off against Oregon and the animosity between the two teams was pretty obvious right from the get go. We had a UCLA runner get caught in a pickle between third base and home plate where he proceeded to throw an elbow at the third baseman. He was ejected, only to be followed by Oregon getting a bench warning for unsportsmanlike conduct after a bomb home run and subsequent bat flip and stare down.
It turns out UCLA ended up winning the game and the championship with a dramatic walk off victory in the 11th inning of the game. Like said, if you think baseball is boring, you clearly didn't watch this game. I will admit that not all of them can be this exciting, but every once in a while you just might be surprised.
As I sit and wait for the Women's College World Series games to start today, I thought it might be a good idea to take an updated look at the current MLB standings.
Tampa Bay is no longer the top dog in the AL, well not exactly. They technically are, but they are also tied with the Yankees for the top spot in the AL as well as the AL East with 34 wins. Cleveland is close behind them at the top of the AL Central with 33 wins, then we have the White Sox with 28 wins and Settle leading the AL West also with 28 wins.
Toronto, Minnesota, and the Athletics all have twenty seven wins putting them somewhere in the middle of their respective divisions. The Tigers remain tied with the Royals with 22 wins, Houston and Texas both have 25 wins, and Boston rounds out the AL East with 23 wins.
Finally, the Angels sit all the way at the bottom of the AL with 21 wins.
Over in the National League, the Braves are still riding high with 37 wins on the season, but the Dodgers are close behind them with 36 wins. Which puts them at the top of the NL East and the NL West respectively. Milwaukee leads the NL Central with 33 wins. Back over in the NL West, Arizona and San Diego both have 31 wins while San Francisco struggles at 22 wins and Colorado still has the leagues worst record at 20 and 37.
Things are tight in the NL Central with St. Louis, The Cubs, Cincinnati, and Pittsburgh all having 29 or 30 wins a piece. Likewise, Philly and Washington both have 29 wins in the NL East with Miami holding 26 wins and the Mets rounding out the bottom with 23 wins (still better than the Tigers!).
