Look, I'm going to be honest with you. Last night was not a great night to be a hockey fan if your name rhymes with "Baffalo Schmabres." But we're going to get through this together. Grab something to drink. We've got two games to break down and some homework to do before the weekend.
😬 Sabres vs. Canadiens — Game 5 | MTL 6, BUF 3
Series: Montreal leads 3-2
I'm not going to sugarcoat it. The Sabres got lit up in their own building last night and it was not fun to watch. The Canadiens came into KeyBank Center and went full ruin everyone's evening mode, hanging six on us like they were trying to send a message. They sent it. We received it. Loud and clear.
Montreal was clicking on all cylinders. Lane Hutson looked every bit the generational talent he's supposed to be, and Nick Suzuki was doing Nick Suzuki things — quiet, efficient, maddening. The Sabres couldn't buy a bounce in the second period and by the time the third rolled around, the building had that particular kind of silence that only a playoff blowout can produce.
Tage Thompson had a goal. Great. Gold star. Not enough.
Here's the cold reality: the Sabres now have to go into Montreal — the Bell Centre, one of the loudest buildings in hockey — and win a road game just to stay alive. This team beat Boston in six. They've shown they can dig out of hard spots. But losing at home in a Game 5 you absolutely needed? That stings in a specific way.
The good news — and yes, there is some — is that Alex Tuch has been the heartbeat of this team all playoffs and doesn't look remotely rattled. And if you watched the Bruins series, you know this group doesn't fold. They just need to remember that on Saturday night when 21,000 Montrealers are absolutely losing their minds in the Bell Centre.
🎯 What to watch in Game 6: How does Buffalo respond emotionally? Getting blown out at home is one thing. Showing up ready in a hostile building 24 hours later is another. If they're passive in the first period, this series is over. If they come out with some desperation energy early — and I mean immediately — they've got a shot.
🏒 Ducks vs. Golden Knights — Game 6 | VGK 5, ANA 1
Series: Vegas wins 4-2
Welp. The Anaheim Ducks had a hell of a run and it is officially over.
Vegas closed it out last night in Anaheim and it wasn't particularly close. The Golden Knights looked like a team that had been here before — because they have, many times — and the Ducks looked like a team that ran out of road after punching way above their weight class for two rounds. That's not an insult. That's a genuinely impressive playoff performance from a team that had no business pushing the Golden Knights to six games.
The Ducks exceeded every expectation. Their young core got real playoff experience. Good for them. See you next year.
Vegas, meanwhile, just booked their ticket to the Western Conference Finals against the Colorado Avalanche, who've been absolutely rolling through everyone they've faced. That series starts Wednesday, May 20, and I'll be previewing it properly early next week. Spoiler: the Avalanche are terrifying and this is going to be extremely fun to watch if you're a neutral.
📅 What's Next: Games to Circle
🔴 Sabres at Canadiens — Game 6
Saturday, May 16 | 8:00 PM ET | ABC/ESPN
Montreal leads series 3-2
Must-win for Buffalo. Simple as that. Lose this one and the season is done. Win it and we get a Game 7 at home Monday night in Buffalo, which would be absolutely unhinged in the best possible way. KeyBank Center for a Game 7 with this team's season on the line? Forget it. The roof comes off.
The Canadiens will have all the momentum and the crowd at their backs. Buffalo needs road warrior energy, a clean first period, and for Tage Thompson to remind everyone why he's one of the best players in this league.
No pressure.
🎯 Prediction: Buffalo wins a tight one, 3-2. Devon Levi stands on his head when it matters. Tuch scores. We get our Game 7. I'm manifesting it, don't @ me.
🔵 Sabres vs. Canadiens — Game 7 (if necessary)
Monday, May 18 | 7:30 PM ET | ESPN
At Buffalo
If we get here, I will be a complete and total wreck and I won't apologize for it. A 15-year playoff drought, a second-round series, winner-take-all in front of the home crowd? That's the stuff. That's why you watch.
We'll cross that bridge Saturday night.
⚡ Vegas Golden Knights vs. Colorado Avalanche — Western Conference Finals
Starts Wednesday, May 20 | TBD | TBD
Series: 0-0
This is your Western storyline. The Presidents' Trophy winner Avalanche against a battle-tested Vegas team that just went through a six-game war with the Ducks. Colorado has been the class of the West all season. Vegas has more playoff experience than most teams have roster spots. Full breakdown coming next week.
The Bottom Line
Thursday gave us a gut punch (thanks, Montreal) and a series-closing blowout out West. The Ducks are done. The Sabres are not — not yet — but they've got 60 minutes to prove it in one of the hardest buildings in hockey Saturday night.
Set your alarm. Clear your Saturday. Buffalo needs witnesses.
