This marks the first publication of my Studio Gear Video Series, showcasing all the new audio production hardware I am acquiring to have what is required for the type of production I am pursuing, and will occasionally update with even newer gear as different artist's needs expand with this space. First up is the baller mic stand I just picked up today in Eugene.
There are hardly any quality microphone stands made for recording these days, and when you do find really good new ones, they are EXPENSIVE! Even still - the new expensive ones don't even hold up to the quality of certain vintage stands from decades past.
Atlas Sound mic stands from the 60's had a manufacturing defect that apparently spanned in production for the better part of a decade, before a fix was applied to the design. The defect was in the boom arm connecter joint, which would often come loose and fail when connected to very expensive microphones, causing costly damage to amazing gear. Sometime in the early 70's this was finally addressed and updated to the type of joint you see in the model I received - pictured below.
Neither my research nor the kind lady I bought this from can tell me what exact model stand this is. I could not even find one photo of this exact stand online ANYWHERE! Please enlighten me.
Based on the limited information I found in my research, I would have to guess that this is a 1970's model stand. It has a pure cast iron base and metal slider on the boom arm for perfect balance and weight distribution, creating a stand that can take almost any weight or awkward position you could set it to. The rest of the stand is made of pure steel and appears to have been chromed (iron originally painted black).
I feel very lucky and fortunate to own this stand - just wait till you see what the whole setup looks like when I combine it with an Irish made M600 solid mount, a Pauly Tron pop filter, and my Stellar CM-6 mic. In short - it's going to look and sound DOPE! Check the video below...
