The first time I camped I didn't even have a tent, the travel agency included it for the excursion and even rented the camping mat and sleeping bag if you didn't have one. I had absolutely no equipment, only the desire to live the experience.
La primera vez que acampé no tenía ni carpa, la agencia de viajes la incluía para la excursión y hasta te alquilaba el aislante y el saco de dormir si no tenías. Yo no tenía absolutamente ningún equipamiento, solamente las ganas de vivir la experiencia.
I decided to buy a few things before the trip: a sleeping bag and a raincoat, so those were my first acquisitions to start in the world of camping.
Decidí comprar antes del viaje algunas cosas: un saco de dormir y un impermeable, así que esas fueron mis primeras adquisiciones para empezar en el mundo de la acampada.
I remember that I bought the sleeping bag in a store in downtown Caracas that sold all kinds of items, such as toys, backpacks, things for the home, that is, it wasn't a place specializing in camping equipment, but since at that time I didn't know much about the subject, I went and bought the first sleeping bag I saw. Besides its price was affordable, as for the raincoat, I bought it in a hardware store.
Recuerdo que el saco de dormir lo compré en una tienda del centro de Caracas que vendía todo tipo de artículos, como juguetes, morrales, cosas para el hogar, es decir, no era un lugar especializado en equipos para acampar, pero como en ese entonces yo no sabía mucho del tema, fui y compré el primer saco de dormir que vi. Además su precio era accesible, en cuanto al impermeable, lo compré en una ferretería.
That's how I camped for the first time, with a tent and camping mat from the travel agency and my own sleeping bag. Jajaja, me encantó la experiencia y allí comenzó mi interés en querer tener mi equipamiento, porque definitivamente ¡yo iba a seguir acampando!
When I got back from that adventure I started researching on the Internet about equipment and prices to find out how much I would have to invest for the basics. Shortly after I got a tent in a Chinese online store, with good value for money, and the best thing is that the shipping was free, I bought it. It took less than a month to arrive, when I opened it super excited I had no idea how to assemble it hahaha, but I watched the instructions calmly and little by little I did it.
Al volver de esa aventura me puse a investigar en Internet sobre equipos y precios y así saber cuánto tendría que invertir para lo básico. Poco tiempo después conseguí una carpa en una tienda online china, con buena relación calidad-precio, y lo mejor es que el envío era gratis, la compré. Tardó menos de un mes en llegar, cuando la abrí súper emocionada no tenía idea de cómo armarla jajaja, pero vi las instrucciones con calma y poco a poco lo logré.
Then I also bought a camping mat, although I wasn't satisfied because they sent me one of a different thickness than I ordered, thinner, but it was a mess to return it so I kept it.
Luego también compré un aislante, aunque no quedé satisfecha porque me enviaron uno de un grosor diferente del que pedí, más delgado, pero era un lío devolverlo así que me lo quedé.
Ok, I already had a sleeping bag, tent and camping mat, and I wanted to use them! As I follow several hiking accounts on social networks, one day I saw that one posted that they were going to Naiguatá Peak, the highest of the Venezuelan coastal mountain range, a classic route for hikers in the capital region. It was free, everyone had to carry their own gear and the novelty was that the ascent would be at night, to reach the summit at dawn.
Ok, ya tenía saco de dormir, carpa y aislante, ¡y quería usarlos! Como sigo en redes sociales a varias cuentas de senderismo, un día vi que una publicó que irían al Pico Naiguatá, el más alto de la cordillera de la costa venezolana, una ruta clásica para los excursionistas de la región capital. Era gratis, cada quien debía llevar sus cosas y tenía la novedad de que el ascenso sería en la noche, para llegar a la cima al amanecer.
Among the things they recommended to bring was of course a flashlight. I had one but it was handheld and battery operated, it was better to have one of those that you put on your head, so before the excursion I bought a rechargeable one.
Entre las cosas que recomendaban llevar por supuesto estaba una linterna. Yo tenía una pero era de mano y con pilas, era mejor tener una de las que se ponen en la cabeza, así que antes de la excursión compré una recargable.
It was a hit, illuminated very well and the recharge lasted the entire trip (2 days). It's been a while and has gone on several trips since I bought it and it still works fine.

On the Naiguatá Peak hike I used my first tent, camping mat and flashlight and was very satisfied with my gear.

But doing this route I realized that I needed a bigger backpack, one of those special ones for camping trips where you can put everything properly. My backpack, even though it was for outdoor activities, was too small for this type of excursion.

Bueno, esa fue mi siguiente adquisición. Nuevamente en una tienda online china, encontré un morral con muy buenas características: material resistente, impermeable, varios compartimientos, 85 litros. También compré una mochila de hidratación de 3 litros, vi a unos compañeros que la tenían y me pareció súper práctica, no tienes que detenerte y sacar la botella del morral para tomar agua, tienes el pitillo a tu alcance al lado de tu hombro cada vez que necesites beber.
Now I was ready for a more demanding excursion, both physically and in terms of equipment. The opportunity came with a route in the Venezuelan Andean state of Merida, a mecca for mountaineers in the country.

So this trip I did very well equipped, the only thing I was missing was a camping stove, but as other companions had it and lent it to me if I needed it, there was no problem. Bueno, hasta aquí les he hablado de lo básico que sugiero hay que tener para acampar, recapitulemos: carpa, saco de dormir, aislante, impermeable, mochila grande (más de 70 litros), linterna de cabeza, mochila de hidratación (opcional, puedes llevar botellas plásticas si lo prefieres) y cocina de camping. Ahora hablemos de otras cosas como la ropa, los zapatos y otros implementos necesarios para estar cómodos y pasarla bien tanto si acampamos en la montaña como en la playa.
Let's start with the clothing, it is vital that it is appropriate for the climate, for example in the mountains it is usually cold, so we should take warm, waterproof and quick drying clothes. I have had more experience camping in the mountains, in cold climates and at first I froze because I didn't have the right clothes. You should have comfortable pants for the routes, a long-sleeved blouse and a winter jacket, which will keep you warm.
Empecemos por la ropa, es vital que sea apropiada para el clima, por ejemplo en las montañas suele hacer frío, entonces debemos llevar piezas que calienten, sean impermeables y de secado rápido. He tenido más experiencia acampando en montañas, en climas fríos y al principio me congelé porque no tenía la ropa adecuada. Debes tener un pantalón cómodo para las rutas, una blusa manga larga y una chaqueta de invierno, que te abrigue bien.
To sleep it is good to have thick leggings and your special socks for the cold. Even so I have slept a few times with all the clothes I had on hahaha, the cold was unbearable.
Para dormir es bueno tener unos leggins gruesos y tus calcetines especiales para el frío. Aún así yo he dormido algunas veces con toda la ropa que tenía puesta jajaja, es que el frío estaba insoportable.
About shoes, I definitely recommend boots, the ones that are special for the mountains, they keep your feet and ankles firm. And if you are going to camp on a beach, trekking sandals are the best, since you can get them wet without problems.
Sobre los zapatos sin duda recomiendo las botas, las que son especiales para montaña, te mantienen los pies y los tobillos firmes. Y si vas a acampar en una playa, unas sandalias de trekking son lo mejor, ya que las puedes mojar sin problemas.
As for accessories there are some that should not be missing, for cold weather a good scarf, a beanie to keep your ears covered and gloves, and for any weather, a hat that covers you well from the sun and sunglasses.
En cuanto a los accesorios hay algunos que no deben faltar, para el frío una buena bufanda, gorro que te mantenga las orejas cubiertas y guantes, y para cualquier clima, un sombrero que te cubra bien del sol y también lentes de sol.
In our list we must also include everything that has to do with the handling of the food that we take to the camping, the main implement that I never leave is a multiple cutlery, it doesn't occupy much space and has everything we might need.
En nuestra lista debemos incluir asimismo todo lo que tiene que ver con la manipulación de los alimentos que llevemos a la acampada, el implemento principal que nunca dejo es un multi cubierto, no ocupa mucho espacio y tiene todo lo que podríamos necesitar.
A light plate and glass, and napkins, are also must-haves, as well as plastic bags to put all our garbage in and take it back to deposit it where it belongs in the city.
Un plato y vaso ligeros, y servilletas, son cosas que también hay que tener, así como bolsas plásticas para meter toda nuestra basura y llevarla de vuelta para depositarla donde corresponde en la ciudad.
We should also bring our toiletries and other for personal use, I will mention some of the things I usually take: towel, biodegradable soap (so as not to contaminate the water of the rivers), wet towels (in cold places they work for a dry bath hehehe), deodorant, toothbrush and toothpaste, sunscreen for skin and lips, mosquito repellent (there are places where the pest is very strong), toilet paper, first aid kit and analgesic and antipyretic pills. And well, I think that's it for a happy camping trip 😊.
No pueden faltar igualmente nuestras cosas de aseo y otras de uso personal, les mencionaré algunas que yo suelo llevar: toalla, jabón biodegradable (para no contaminar las aguas de los ríos), toallas húmedas (en lugares fríos funcionan para darse un baño seco jejeje), desodorante, cepillo y pasta dental, protector solar para la piel y los labios, repelente contra zancudos (hay lugares donde la plaga es muy fuerte), papel higiénico, kit de primeros auxilios y pastillas analgésicas y antipiréticas. Y bueno, creo que es todo para una feliz acampada 😊.
