I picked this game up recently and have played a few games. The game is developed by the company Kosmos, a well known game company who created games like Imhotep, Lost Cities, and the Exit series games.
Dimension is a fast paced game that requires a lot of quick thinking and the ability to create a pattern while satisfying up to six rules.
Each player is given a board that holds 15 round colored balls. The board has cutouts to allow you to stack the balls up to three levels high.
How to play
At the start of each round you arrange your board as you see above. Each round 6 cards are drawn that are shared by all players. These cards establish the rules for the round that all players must follow when arranging their balls.
Above you can find an example set of cards for a typical round.
- The first card specifies you can only use 2 orange balls.
- The second card specifies all blue balls must touch a black ball.
- The third card says no white ball can touch any green ball.
- The fourth card says a black ball cannot be on top of any other color.
- The fifth card specifies you must have more orange balls than black balls.
- The sixth and final card says you must have a total of 4 orange and white balls.
Once the cards are displayed, the hour glass is turned over and everyone has to start immediately. You have around 1 minute to stack your balls to satisfy all the rules specified by the cards. In some rare cases you will get rules that conflict with each other. In these cases each player picks which rules you want to follow and take the loss in points.
Scoring
Your score is how many balls you played (up to 11) minus two points for every rule you were unable to satisfy. If you used one of each color and satisfied all the rules, you get a bonus token.
At the end of 6 turns, you count your total points and add/subtract your bonus based on how many bonus tokens you earned during those six rounds.
Bonus Points
The game only takes a few minutes to learn to play but will continue to challenge you every round. You can play up to four players at once and is a great game to play with kids provided the have the patience and attention span.
While the game is a bit expensive for what you get, I highly recommend this game for any small group of gamers. It is fun, challenging, and only requires 20-30 minutes to play a round.
