Hola, hola, mis queridos lectores. Aquí les cuento cómo me fue en el IX Coloquio: El Tabaco en la Tradición Popular, de Planta Medicinal y Ritual a Patrimonio de América realizado por el Centro de Estudios Caribeños en el Complejo Cultural Luis Manuel Peñalver.

Todo comenzó semanas antes con la preparación del evento. Este ya tenía tiempo planificándose, así que, cuando yo llegué, solo me ajusté a lo ya dispuesto. Todo marchaba bien hasta que me dijeron que debía leer una ponencia y, además, moderar parte del evento. Eso fue un poco rápido para mí, pero me adapté a los requerimientos, porque como digo yo: Cuando toca, toca. Pero, claro, tuve ayuda de dos de mis profesoras, quienes no dudaron en encaminarme y hacerme sus recomendaciones. A esas dos señoras, les agradezco un mundo su ayuda.

El Complejo Luis Manuel Peñalver fue el escenario ideal para desarrollar las actividades de este IX Coloquio: El Tabaco en la Tradición Popular, de Planta Medicinal y Ritual a Patrimonio de América, propuesto por el Centro de Investigaciones de Estudios Caribeños de la Universidad de Oriente. Se desarrolló en dos partes o, mejor dicho, en dos días miércoles 21 y jueves 22.

La instalación del evento estuvo a cargo de destacadas personalidades de la Universidad de Oriente. Es un hecho que en las exposiciones se destacó que este evento, de ninguna manera, pretendía ser una apología al tabaco, sino una actividad que busca resaltar el significado histórico, cultural y comercial del mismo. Recordemos que esta planta se cultiva en América desde tiempos ancestrales con intereses ritualistas y medicinales, pero, también significó y, sigue siendo, un rubro muy importante para el comercio interno y externo de nuestro país y nuestra ciudad.

Sin embargo, conscientes de las realidades perniciosas de su consumo, a este coloquio no faltaron las ponencias relacionadas con las consecuencias del uso y abuso de la nicotina. Todas estuvieron maravillosas, pero hubo una, en especial que robó la atención de todos, la del Dr. Eduard González. Este destacó por su fácil explicación, presentación y entusiasta disertación. Es muy bueno cuando una persona deja al descubierto todo lo que sabe, haciéndolo de forma sencilla y amena.

Este día disfrutamos de una mesa temática cargada de literatura y cultura en las que pudimos escuchar diferentes trabajos que resaltan las distintas representaciones del tabaco en el campo del cine, el teatro, la música, etc. Esta vez me tocó a mí moderar parte del evento. Estaba un poco nerviosa, porque hace mucho tiempo no hacía nada como eso. La experiencia fue buena, todo ocurrió sin sobresaltos y los nervios desaparecieron poco a poco.

Los ponentes nos sorprendieron con unas producciones muy buenas. Nos paseamos por el refranero popular que aborda directamente el tema del tabaco. Posteriormente, tuvimos la oportunidad de escuchar una ponencia que analizaba las representaciones del tabaco y el humo en la canción La Oración del Tabaco, en la que se advierten las distintas formas en las que se le atribuye poder del tabaco. Seguidamente, exploramos las representaciones del humo del tabaco en algunas producciones fílmicas infantiles en las que siempre aparece un personaje, generalmente, el villano o, de pronto, uno secundario que queda grabado en la memoria de todos y también pudimos acercarnos de la mujer y su espiritualidad en la obra de teatro de Román Delgado Chalbaud.

Por último, esta sesión terminó con una representación teatral, en la que participó una de las profesoras que forman parte del Centro de Estudios, quien, además de ser investigadora en temas relacionados con el Caribe y ser profesora de Castellano y Literatura, también es profesora de actuación. Ese día el cierre de la actividad estuvo a su cargo y lo hizo de una forma memorable.

Ella, junto a dos de sus compañeros, nos divirtieron con una lectura dramatizada del monólogo de la obra de Sobre el daño del Café de Antón Chejov y, posteriormente, nos presentó un fragmento del poema teatral de Antonio José Vega, titulado Entre Patio (historia de Hortencia). En la primera, pudimos reírnos, con la segunda, el corazón se apretó un poco, pero ambas nos dejaron una muy buena impresión y sirvieron para cerrar con broche de oro uno de los tantos proyectos que tiene para ofrecer el Centro de Estudios Caribeños de la UDO.

Realizar este tipo de actividades resalta que Cumaná tiene mucho por explorar, es una ciudad que permite, no solo la investigación académica, sino también la recreativa y cultural, por esa razón, no dudaré en traerles estas publicaciones para que se enteren de estas actividades.

*Hello, hello, my dear readers. Here I tell you how I did at the IX Colloquium: Tobacco in the Popular Tradition, from Medicinal and Ritual Plant to Heritage of America held by the Center for Caribbean Studies at the Luis Manuel Peñalver Cultural Complex.*

Everything began weeks before with the preparation of the event. The event had already been planned for some time, so when I arrived, I only adjusted to what had already been arranged. Everything was going well until I was told that I had to read a paper and also moderate part of the event. That was a bit fast for me, but I adapted to the requirements, because as I say: When it's time, it's time. But, of course, I had help from two of my professors, who did not hesitate to guide me and give me their recommendations. To those two ladies, I am very grateful for their help.

The Luis Manuel Peñalver Complex was the ideal scenario to develop the activities of this IX Colloquium: Tobacco in the Popular Tradition, from Medicinal and Ritual Plant to Heritage of America, proposed by the Research Center for Caribbean Studies of the Universidad de Oriente. It was held in two parts, or rather, in two days, Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22.

Wednesday 21

The installation of the event was in charge of outstanding personalities of the Universidad de Oriente. It is a fact that in the presentations it was emphasized that this event, in no way, intended to be an apology to tobacco, but an activity that seeks to highlight the historical, cultural and commercial significance of it. Let us remember that this plant has been cultivated in America since ancient times for ritualistic and medicinal purposes, but it also meant, and still is, a very important item for the internal and external trade of our country and our city.

However, aware of the pernicious realities of its consumption, this colloquium was not lacking in presentations related to the consequences of the use and abuse of nicotine. All of them were wonderful, but there was one in particular that stole everyone's attention, that of Dr. Eduard Gonzalez. He stood out for his easy explanation, presentation and enthusiastic dissertation. It is very good when a person reveals everything he knows, doing it in a simple and pleasant way.

Thursday 22nd

This day we enjoyed a thematic table full of literature and culture in which we were able to listen to different works highlighting the different representations of tobacco in the field of cinema, theater, music, etc. This time it was my turn to moderate part of the event. I was a little nervous, because it had been a long time since I had done anything like that. The experience was good, everything went smoothly and the nerves disappeared little by little.

The speakers surprised us with some very good productions. We walked through the popular sayings that directly address the subject of tobacco. Afterwards, we had the opportunity to listen to a presentation that analyzed the representations of tobacco and smoke in the song La Oración del Tabaco, in which the different ways in which the power of tobacco is attributed to it are noted. Next, we explored the representations of tobacco smoke in some children's film productions in which a character always appears, generally the villain or, suddenly, a secondary one that remains engraved in everyone's memory, and we were also able to approach the woman and her spirituality in the play by Román Delgado Chalbaud.

Finally, this session ended with a theatrical performance, with the participation of one of the professors who is part of the Study Center, who, in addition to being a researcher on issues related to the Caribbean and being a professor of Spanish and Literature, is also a professor of acting. She was in charge of closing the activity that day and she did it in a memorable way.

She, along with two of her colleagues, entertained us with a dramatized reading of a monologue from the play On the Harm of Coffee by Anton Chekhov and, later, she presented us with a fragment of a theatrical poem by Antonio José Vega, entitled Entre Patio (Hortencia's story). In the first, we were able to laugh, with the second, the heart was a little tightened, but both left us a very good impression and served to close with a flourish one of the many projects that the Center for Caribbean Studies of the UDO has to offer.

Carrying out this type of activities highlights that Cumana has much to explore, it is a city that allows not only academic research, but also recreational and cultural, for that reason, I will not hesitate to bring you these publications so that you can learn about these activities.
