I am having quite fun nowadays reading quite a lot of books written by Roald Dahl. I have been reading about the Big Friendly Giant (BFG), about Danny The Champion of the World, and some other books. The most recent in the row of books was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
For some reason, I have never seen the movie from 2005 directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp. I don't really know why. Maybe the main reason is that I am not really a big fan of Johnny Depp because he is also so strange in all his roles. But, after reading the book, I decided to give the movie a chance, and to be honest... I was very positively surprised!
Start with the book... it is brilliant!
First of all, it is really useful and healthy to sit down and to actually read a book. So, why don't you sit down and read the book first? It will help your world of imagination come alive, and it is way more fun to watch the movie afterward to see if your imagination and how Tim Burton imagined it is similar or very different... but that is part of the fun!
It should also be said that the movie is very true to the book, except for a few differences (additions) at the end of the movie.
Why I liked Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
I don't like Johnny Depp, but to be honest, he is just fantastic in this movie. He is playing the role as Willy Wonka, the leader of the Chocolate Factory who hasn't received a guest in many years. They are creating the best chocolates in the entire world, and now 5 lucky kids have gotten the chance to visit the factory. One of them is Charlie who comes from a really poor home in which they only have money to eat cabbage and dry bread every day.
Inside the factory, four of the kids prove that they are very badly raised, and they are not listening to watch Willy Wonka says at any time. This causes trouble, and whenever a kid is in trouble, the Umpa-Lumpa people working in the factory comes forth with some cool songs making fun of the kid and Johnny Depp smiles and dances along with the rhythms... it is way more fun than it sounds!
The moral of the movie is somehow good...
The story has a good end, and they have added an addition to the movie that cannot be found in the book, giving an even stronger focus on the importance of choosing family ahead of business. This is something unknown to Willy Wonka, but in the end, he understands, and life takes a change for him as well!
My score for this movie: 8/10
In other words, go ahead and watch it... but get started with the book first! You can watch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on Netflix in quite a lot of countries. For more Netflix-related news, make sure to visit https://netflix.fromabroad.org/
