A few weeks ago, I noticed a title on Netflix that sounded interesting: Sophie: A Murder in West Cork. I didn't have anything else that I had planned to stream that evening, so I started watching this Netflix documentary with my wife.
To be honest, I didn't even know that it was a documentary at the start. I actually thought it would be a British crime series, but I was quickly proven wrong on that theory.
Sophie: A Murder in West Cork takes us back to the 1990s in which a murder takes place in West Cork (in Ireland). The murdered woman was is a French lady called Sophie, and she has been brutally murdered outside her house. This was an area in which a murder hadn't taken place in more than 100 years, totally surprising the community.
And so the investigation starts and in the documentary (of 3 parts) we get to follow the developments in the case, all until the present day.
Is Sophie: A Murder in West Cork worth watching?
I did watch this series until the end. From the first moment on, I felt like I could save 180 minutes of streaming simply by visiting Wikipedia and find my answers at once, but I wanted to give it a chance. So, I stayed around until the end, and it was interesting. But at the same time, it was unnecessarily long, and as I noticed a similar Netflix production about a criminal case in Brazil, I just told myself that this time I will just read about it on Wikipedia instead.
The developments of the case were interesting to follow, and the same can be said about everyone interviewed. Now, this might spoil the story, but the fact that they also interview and speak with the person who most likely actually murdered Sophie also brings some spice to the story.
But, in the end (since this is real life), we end up with a documentary that kind of brings a conclusion to the story, but no killer has been 100% caught and put to prison yet.
Final words...
Give it a try. After 25 minutes of the first episode, you will most likely find out if this is something for you or not. If you are bored, read about it on Wikipedia instead.
I hope you have found this article useful. Have you seen the documentary yourself? How did you like it? I would love to hear your thoughts!
