Every 3rd Friday in February is designated as National Caregivers Day. But if you are one of many who have taken on the role as caregiver for an aged loved one, you know very well that every day is caregivers’ day.
Taking care of aged loved ones is not an easy task, especially if the loved one is ill or incapacitated to some degree physically or mentally.
Here are some simple tips for taking care of yourself and your aged loved one.
1. Ask for help when you get overwhelmed either financially or the tasks are too many to handle by yourself. You cannot do it all. If you have siblings or reliable family and friends call for a meeting and delegate tasks.
2. Avoid destructive coping mechanisms (e.g., consuming too much alcohol and overeating). Caring for aged parents or other loved ones can be overwhelming especially when the parent is ill and completely dependent on you. But instead of harmful self-medicating methods, incorporate practices such as mindfulness techniques, meditation, regular exercise and participation in an appropriate support group.
3. Consider hiring a nurse who will help in your absence. If you have a career outside the home, it is unfair to you to jeopardize your work. Select a reliable nursing service and choose a nurse who understands your loved one’s particular needs. Maintaining a job while also taking care of your relatives is possible with a qualified professional assisting in the caregiving. In your off-work hours, you can personally attend to your parents’ needs.
4. If you decide to be a full-time caregiver then you have to ensure you are well organized, relaxed and are in the correct mindset to give your parents the best. Develop a schedule to ensure you effectively fulfill your caregiver duties and have quality time for your self-care.
