The Burgos city of Castrojeriz, which makes, more or less, a border, not only natural, but also historical, with the aridity of Palencia's Tierra de Campos (Land of Fields), still constitutes, after centuries, one of the most of what is possibly the most popular of the pilgrimage routes to the Tomb of the Apostle, in Santiago de Compostela: the Old Way or French Way. A city, which, as its own name indicates, rises on the same hill as those irreducible Celtiberians did in the past, when they built their fort or city on it. A city, moreover, that also pays an important devotion to an architectural style such as the Gothic and very particularly, in addition, to a very special Marian figure, who, because she is the bearer of the fruit of Original Sin, for which she engendered in her womb to the Redeemer, bears the name, Our Lady of the Apple.
But Castrojeriz has also always been famous, because in it, apart from the Knights Templar who had one of their main commendations in the neighboring Palencia town of Villalcázar de Sirga, one of the orders also settled here, founding an important hospital. most mysterious monasteries of the Middle Ages: that of San Antón. Known as the Antonians and recognized by the Tau-shaped cross they wore on their habit - one of the most sacred forms of cross known, since it also served as the sign that the Israelites placed on their door frame when God sent the exterminating angel to take away the firstborn of the Egyptians who held them prisoner in the time of Ramses II - were, in their time, the only ones capable of alleviating and treating with guarantees a terrible disease, ergotism, known in those times as 'fire of hell' or 'fire of San Anton'. Today, the mysterious ruins of the fabulous monastery that used to be outside the city walls maintain a modest hostel for pilgrims, which guarantees, despite its rudimentary means, a refuge where you can rest and regain strength to continue the vital experience of your personal adventure. and of course, transcendental.
La ciudad burgalesa de Castrojeriz, que hace, poco más o menos, que frontera, no sólo natural, sino también histórica, con la aridez de la Tierra de Campos palentina, constituye, todavía y al cabo de los siglos, uno de los hitos más importantes del que posiblemente sea el más popular de los caminos de peregrinación a la Tumba del Apóstol, en Santiago de Compostela: el Camino Viejo o Camino Francés. Una ciudad, que, como su propio nombre indica, se eleva sobre el mismo cerro que en el pasado lo hicieron aquellos irreductibles celtíberos, cuando levantaron en él su castro o ciudad. Una ciudad, además, que también rinde una importante devoción a un estilo arquitectónico como el Gótico y muy particularmente, por añadidura, a una figura Mariana muy especial, que, por ser portadora del fruto del Pecado Original, por el que engendró en su vientre al Redentor, lleva por nombre, Nuestra Señora del Manzano.
Pero Castrojeriz, además, ha sido siempre famosa, porque en ella, aparte de los caballeros templarios que tenían en la vecina localidad palentina de Villalcázar de Sirga una de sus principales encomiendas, también se instalaron aquí, fundando un importante hospital, una de las órdenes monásticas más misteriosas de la Edad Media: la de San Antón. Conocidos como los antonianos y reconocidos por la cruz en forma de Tau que lucían en su hábito -una de las formas más sagradas de cruz que se conoce, pues, además, sirvió como la señal que pusieron los israelitas en el marco de su puerta cuando Dios envió al ángel exterminador a llevarse a los primogénitos de los egipcios que los mantenían prisioneros en tiempos de Ramsés II- fueron, en su tiempo, los únicos capaces de aliviar y tratar con garantías una terrible enfermedad, el ergotismo, conocida en aquellos tiempos como ‘fuego del infierno’ o ‘fuego de San Antón’. Hoy en día, las misteriosas ruinas del fabuloso monasterio que tenían extramuros de la ciudad, mantienen un modesto albergue para peregrinos, que garantiza, a pesar de sus rudimentarios medios, un refugio donde descansar y reponer fuerzas para continuar la vital experiencia de su aventura personal y por supuesto, trascendental.
