For much of the 20th century, these balconies of an old period building, located on Madrid's central Paseo de Recoletos, stood as a landmark, their heights reaching towards the city. They were situated opposite that metaphorical and marvelous time capsule, the Prado Museum, which receives millions of eager visitors throughout the year.
Originally, the floor below these balconies, where Velázquez, Las Meninas, and Kings Charles III and Charles IV, among others, were displayed, housed another of those whimsical shops, specializing in the finest Toledo steel. Its swords and reproductions not only piqued the interest of avid collectors but also tempted tourists who couldn't resist the allure of taking home a replica of the weapons that once made Spain the leader of Europe.
Durante buena parte del pasado siglo XX, fueron un referente que levantaba las alturas hacia esos balcones de un viejo edificio de época, situado en el céntrico Paseo de Recoletos de Madrid, situado enfrente de esa metafórica y maravillosa cápsula del tiempo, que, bajo el universal nombre de Museo del Prado, recibe millones de expectantes visitantes a lo largo del año.
En sus orígenes, la planta que se levantaba debajo de esos balcones donde Velázquez, las Meninas, los Reyes Carlos III y Carlos IV, entre otros, era otra de esas tiendas de fantasía, especializada en los mejores aceros de Toledo, cuyas espadas y reproducciones despertaban no sólo el interés del ávido coleccionista, sino también el capricho de unos turistas que no podía evitar la seducción de llevarse una reproducción de aquellas armas que un día hicieron de España la cabeza de Europa.
