The castle of La Puebla de Sanabria is one of the few medieval castles, which, superbly restored to the pride of the people of Sanabria, also constitutes a gratifying double cultural focus. While notable figures from the history of Spain were present within its fortified walls, its use, among other things, as the current Municipal Library and Archive, in some ways, brings its relevance back into the spotlight, with a more noble purpose, for example, than that of the superb and not too distant Templar castle of Ponferrada, whose parade ground once housed the football field of the local team, Ponferradina.
Associated with the Pimentel family and the powerful Counts of Benavente, its walls, perhaps not as gloomy, somber, and mysterious today as when they were first built back in the 12th century and later refurbished, saw the petticoats and breeches of figures such as Juana the Mad and Philip the Fair slip through the footlights of their bedrooms and chambers. These figures, moreover, not only gave rise to part of that vilifying Black Legend forged by the perfidious sons of Albion, but we could also add to it those impossible loves that forged surprising legends, such as that of the lovers of Teruel or the Dantesque destiny of the Dantesque loves between Francesca de Rimini and Paolo Malatesta, who ended up with their souls in Hell, as described in Chant V of the Divine Comedy.
Es, el de la Puebla de Sanabria, uno de los pocos castillos medievales, que, inmejorablemente recuperado para orgullo de los sanabreses, constituye, además, un gratificante doble foco cultural, pues, si por una parte, en el interior de sus fortificados muros se constató la presencia de notables personajes de la Historia de España, su uso, entre otros, como actual Biblioteca y Archivo Municipal, hacen, que, de alguna manera, su relevancia vuelva a estar de actualidad, con un destino más noble, por ejemplo, que el que tuvo el soberbio y no excesivamente lejano castillo templario de Ponferrada, cuyo patio de armas albergó el campo de fútbol del equipo local: la Ponferradina.
Relacionado con la familia Pimentel y los poderosos condes de Benavente, sus muros, hoy quizás no tan lóbregos, sombríos y misteriosos como cuando comenzaron a ser levantados, allá por el siglo XII y reformados, sucesivamente, más adelante, vieron deslizarse por las candilejas de sus alcobas y habitaciones, las enaguas y los calzones de personajes como Juana la Loca y Felipe el Hermoso, personajes, por añadidura, cuya trágica historia, no sólo dio lugar a parte de esa vilipendiosa Leyenda Negra fraguada por los pérfidos hijos de Albión, sino, que, además, podríamos engrosarla también en esos amores imposibles que fraguaron sorprendentes leyendas, como la de los amantes de Teruel o el dantesco destino de los dantescos amores entre Francesca de Rímini y Paolo Malatesta, que dieron con sus almas en el Infierno, según lo describe el Canto V de la Divina Comedia.
