When someone says Brno, one of the first things that comes to mind is Petrov – the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul. And honestly, it’s no surprise. Its tall towers rise above the city so clearly that you can spot them from almost anywhere. It’s simply one of those landmarks that everyone connects with Brno.
The cathedral has been standing on the hill for a really long time. Its history goes all the way back to the 12th century, and over the years it has gone through many changes. The look we see today came much later, which is exactly why it feels so grand and impressive. Standing beneath it, you suddenly realize how small a person can feel next to such a massive building.
There’s also an interesting Brno tradition connected to it – the bells at Petrov don’t ring noon at 12 o’clock, but already at 11. This tradition comes from the time when Brno defended itself during the Swedish siege and managed to outsmart the enemy.
Whether you’re a tourist or a local, Petrov has its own unique charm. During the day, you get beautiful views over the city, and in the evening the atmosphere feels completely different. It’s one of those places people always enjoy coming back to.

Když se řekne Brno, většině lidí se hned vybaví Petrov – tedy Katedrála sv. Petra a Pavla. A není divu. Ty její vysoké věže trčí nad městem tak výrazně, že ji člověk uvidí skoro odkudkoliv. Je to prostě jedna z věcí, kterou si s Brnem spojí snad každý.
Katedrála stojí na kopci už opravdu dlouho. Její historie sahá až do 12. století a za tu dobu si prošla spoustou změn. Dnešní vzhled dostala až později a právě díky tomu působí tak majestátně. Když stojíte pod ní, člověk si vedle té stavby připadá docela malý.
Zajímavostí je i jedna brněnská tradice – zvony na Petrově neodbíjejí poledne ve 12, ale už v 11 hodin. Má to připomínat dobu, kdy se Brno bránilo švédskému obléhání a díky chytrému tahu nakonec město odolalo.
Ať už jste turista nebo Brňák, Petrov má svoje kouzlo. Přes den nabízí krásný výhled na město a večer má zase úplně jinou atmosféru. Je to jedno z těch míst, kam se člověk rád vrací.
