The old classic small theaters have been disappearing in most cities across North America for years. Calgary is no different, but there are 3 different ones along Stephen Avenue in downtown that are still in use.
The first is one that hasn't actually changed much since I was a child, and it is a place where live stage and many shows and plays can still be seen here. Alberta Theatre Projects' home is known as the Martha Cohen Theatre, and it has been around since the early 1960s.
The Globe Cinema is much older, dating back to 1912, and is home to a traditional movie theater. Just walking by and looking at the posters makes me wish I was around in the early decades of this place. Today it plays a selection of independent and alternative films.
The Palace is another older one here, having been built in 1921, and it functioned as a movie theatre until 1990. The last film shown here was Tango & Cash. In 1993 the building was used as a movie set for Legends of the Fall. Since then it has served as a nightclub and sports bar for a time called Flames Central based around the local NHL team and now hosts regular music acts.
