There is a new Dobro Jutro Komšija movie out, and it has me thinking of Prijedor.
Dobro Jutro Komšija is a series of movies that I was watching to help my process of learning the Serbian language. The show happened to be shot in the same town that my great grandfather came from 100 years ago.
Prijedor, in Bosnia's Republika Srpska.
When I was plotting my trip across Bosnia, I was excited to visit the town that was the location of my favorite show, as well as an ancestral homeland.
Prijedor was the first town that I visited that wasn't a tourist town. It was kind of a shock to me, since almost nobody spoke English at all there, and I was forced to have all of my conversations in Serbian. If I would have spent most of my time in Prijedor, I think my language skills would be better today.
This is a photo is a clock from the city center. Most of this town seemed like an Iron Range town to me, but the city center was very modern and nice.
Pijem dok vozim!
This coffee shop encourages us to drink and drive!
This was my main coffee shop when I was there, but it was because the barista was the most beautiful woman...
She was very patient with me as I spoke broken Serbian to her:)
This is my favorite mural in Prijedor, also in the city center.
Prijedor is also home to the weird abandoned amusement park.
My language skills were not good enough to understand the story completely, but I think it was a corrupt business man that built this place and got thrown in jail. I believe he has since been released, but after being jailed, he abandoned the place.
The slide would shred your flesh.
Bosnian food portions are huge.
People there thought Americans were fat because of how much we eat, but Bosnians eat at least twice as much food. As it turns out, Americans are fat because of poor food quality, not huge quantity.
This is my double decker cheeseburger from the Restoran Sova. It was a wonderful place to eat, although this is two and a half meals for me.
When I go back, I will probably skip Prijedor and go straight to neighboring Banja Luka. None of my relatives were in Prijedor anymore, and I didn't really make any lasting friends there.
When I eventually met someone from the cast of Dobro Jutro Komšija, it was in Banja Luka! I also made a couple of friends in Banja Luka that I am still in contact with, and truly, Banja Luka is like heaven.
