Hello everyone, today we're going to play Misty by Erroll Garner. It's a beautiful and calming piece, and we'll be performing it for flute and guitar.
For me, Misty has something very special. It's one of those songs that doesn't need to rush or grab attention to say a lot. From the very beginning, it feels like a tranquil, almost intimate atmosphere, as if everything slows down a bit. Each note seems designed to breathe, to create space, and that's something I personally love about this piece.
Erroll Garner was an incredible pianist, very unique in his playing style. They say he didn't read music in the traditional way, but even so, he had an impressive sensitivity. He composed Misty almost without thinking too much, as something that simply came out, and I think that comes through. It doesn't sound forced; it sounds honest, natural, like a quiet conversation between two people.
When we play it on flute and guitar, we try to maintain that same feeling, without exaggerating, without overloading it. The idea is for the melody to flow and for each instrument to have its space, as if they were conversing amongst themselves. It's not a piece meant to showcase technique, but rather to convey calm and emotion.
For me, it evokes nostalgia, but a beautiful nostalgia, not a sad one. It's like remembering something that happened a long time ago and smiling without realizing it. I hope that when you listen to it, you can feel a bit of that too, and simply enjoy the moment.
