Once I was sitting irritated and frustrated, angry about something. My brother came silently. He stretched my cheeks in a way that my lips turned into smile shape. He didn't say a word and went away. I felt a sudden change in my mood. Though the smile that was induced was fake yet it not only made me feel better but also let me smile again. It is not just my case but researches demonstrate that mind makes no distinction on real and fake smiles and laugh, instead it takes the same effect from both the types. source So, there is no need for a reason to laugh. If you want to boost positivity in yourself, you can learn to laugh for no reason.
Laughter therapy is a therapeutic technique in which voluntary laughter is used to enhance people's mood. It is believed that voluntary laughter produces the similar physiological and psychological effects as that of spontaneous laughter. It may be done in individual and group settings. Source and source However, in group settings the effects seem to be more powerful than in individual settings. Laughing together draws people closer triggering healthy physical and emotional changes. It doesn't cost anything to laugh but it brings several positive changes in life. A good laugh relaxes the whole body, the effect of which retains on muscles for up to 45 minutes. By decreasing stress hormones and increasing immune cells, laughter boosts one’s ability to fight pains and diseases. Scientific research has also depicted that those who laugh more live longer. source
By facilitating a good blood flow, laughter helps in protecting from several cardiovascular diseases. Laughter has also been found effective in burning calories. Laughing for ten to fifteen minutes a day burns about 40 calories. It means three to four pounds weight can be reduced in a year only by laughing daily. source
Laughter triggers the release of Endophrins (a hormone that makes one feel good) in the body which in turn boosts one’s sense of well being. It helps to overcome negative feelings of anger, sadness or anxiousness. source
Laughter is a free-to-use tool that has the power to turn our miseries into happiness. If we learn to laugh at our tragedies, they turn into comedy. Comedy cartoons and serious movies are not very much different in terms of actions. An act that makes us sad in serious shows, lets us laugh in cartoons.
There is only a difference of interpretation related to a particular activity.
Laughter helps in changing one’s perspective about the situation. By looking at things in a less threatening view one becomes able to overcome the negative consequences. source It has been found that self-mockery or self-deprecating humor increases one’s well being. It enables us to enjoy the silver lining in the dark clouds of negative circumstances. source
So, in order to be happy and healthy, just Laugh. If there isn’t anything funny around, laugh for no reasons; or you can accompany me in my laughter for the tragedy of not producing anything funny while writing for the laughter challenge
