Hi fellow Gardeners,
Today I’m back with the wild forest that’s the garden on the deck! Lol
Condo Garden Journal
The summer this year has been a wild one. It’s been incredibly hot as well as pretty damn cold and rainy. We’ve gotten rain at least one or two days a week since I think about May which is great. The less water I need to pour into the plants the better!
The weather has certainly made for some pretty nice gardening as far as harvest goes. We’ve got all kinds of stuff going on here. The first thing I wanted to share were these delicious tomatoes! The first ones of the year that we were able to pick. We’ve got quite a few tomato plants going so we will certainly be giving updates on how they are doing and how we are picking them.
This view here is before I rearranged things but it’s a little different now. The right side of the deck is where I’m keeping all of the non-tomato plants since they don’t compete or grow as high as the tomatoes do. I have one smaller tomato plant on the right over there but it’s going to be moved to the other side in a few days since it’s now out of the danger stage. It wasn’t doing too well for a bit but now it’s doing well.
What can we say about this cluster of goodness? We have an insanely strong and thriving basil bunch there in the gray pot! Holy crap is that thing doing well lol. We’ve made a point to start to pick a bunch of the basil so we can dry it. One of the things we eat most often in our house is something with basil in it. Be that making tomato sauce, adding it to salads or other things, we use a lot of basil! The little man loves to just eat it as is which is great. He will go out on the deck and just pick a bunch to snack on lol. Can’t blame him! In the back corner we have a raging parsley plant going, I’m going to look up if it flowering is a bad thing for it’s growth or important. I know for basil if it’s flowering that means it’s preparing to die and not give you anymore basil so we always pick the flowers this early in the summer.
Sadly the rose plant died. I don’t know if the white flowers there were competing too much for nutrients but the last flower fell off the plant. I am not too upset about it since I wasn’t sure what I was going to do if I had a rose bush starting on the deck lol. Can’t keep it there! The cucumber plants are starting to sprout which is awesome! I’m going to transplant that to a bigger pot this week so that it can grow bigger. We have a bunch of good sticks to use to put in the pot so that we can give it something to hold onto. We are starting to get some more action from the junior alley there, the tiny plants in the tiny pots. I think when I replant them in bigger pots they are going to explode so that’s on the agenda for this week as well so that we can still harvest the goodies from them before it gets too late for them to bloom.
Tomato central! This corner of the deck is where we’ve got all our tomato plants. I kind of like having them all near each other so that it’s not too bad to differentiate what’s what. We’ve got a few varieties of tomatoes going, Roma, cherry, garden (not sure what this is, but it’s a medium sized one) and grape tomatoes. There’s going to be a lot more growth coming from the other plant now that it’s healthy so I’ll be moving it over to join its cousins! It’s going to be interesting to see what kind of tomatoes will flourish in the space we’ve got and what ones won’t. The Roma plants aren’t doing too well, those are the ones that are yellowing. I don’t know if that’s normal for Roma or not but I was a little surprised to see that. I’m hoping that when we move to a house I can get a garden going of San Marzano tomatoes! Those ones are delicious and what a lot of Italian sauce is made from.
How’s your garden going? Does have a garden he would like to share with the awesome folks in the
community?! I’d love to see!
