ESCAPING DEATH
I was a shy kid, I still am. Back then, I would rather stay in my room to read books or write a poem, rather than go out and play with my friends, and I still do. But the peer pressure to go out and play is like a mango-ube ice cream on a hot, summer day – it’s impossible to say ‘no’!
I loved going out on picnics and swimming in the nearby river called San Diego. Back then, the water was clean enough to drink, it didn't matter if you swallowed a few gulps while playing water games.
I almost died when I was 4 or 5 years old; can’t exactly remember as the events were a little hazy, but I was with relatives on the way to a free flowing river for a little picnic and a dip in the cold natural water as we were accustomed to, especially during the hot summer months.
Time Froze
The Volkswagen was speeding downhill and we were standing on one side of the road, waiting to cross to the other side. I don’t know what came over me, but my feet just moved and I began to run across a highway road that inspires drivers to step on the gas.
A few milliseconds passed and I can hear the screeching tire, leaving a tire mark a few meters long. I felt a rush – not fear – but an overwhelming feeling that seemed to last for a long time. Those few seconds seemed like forever. This was neither my first nor my only experience of coming face to face with death or disaster but that is another story to tell in another post.
Going back to my story…
As I was running across the street, I saw myself turning around. The U-turn saved my life and life returned to normal. We went back to the house and the worried adults talked as adults often do. I waited in my room and was in a mild shock. I can remember some details clearly but not others. The picnic was cancelled and life goes on.
Guardian Angels
Thinking about that event many years ago, I am thankful that I did not die that day. Some people said that my guardian angel or guardian angels (plural) saved me, and I truly believe that there are guardian angels watching over us and doing their best to protect and nurture us, but there are limitations to how they can influence our lives and ‘save’ us from our mistakes. This wasn’t the only time that I felt some help, er, divine intervention in an extremely challenging and dangerous situation.
BECOMING A HEALER
I already knew about chi and chakras when I attended my first pranic healing seminar – an energy healing system developed by Filipino-Chinese teacher Choa Kok Sui who spent considerable time and effort researching about the mechanics and effects of energy healing. He published his findings and first book in 1987 called “Miracles Through Pranic Healing”.
I started practicing after this seminar and became more proficient at it as time went by. I completed the more advanced courses in a few months and began practicing with family and friends until I was invited to do it in a complementary and alternative healing clinic in Quezon City.
I learned about other healing modalities and took more courses to understand more of what I was doing. The Executive Director of the organization running the clinic mentored me for a couple of years and we rented a small ‘clinic’ space to practice, until other things and events overtook our small healing space.
It was a blast doing energy healing for a few years and to meet some of the nicest, most wonderful people along the way. Today, I only do it for family and friends (and a few patients who became friends) because I wanted to focus on other things, such as writing on HIVE, but I will forever cherish that part of my life. The little nuggets of wisdom I picked up from the many teachers and mentors will always be a part of my being.
CONCLUSION
From Yin to Yang?
I was reckless and foolish as a young man, and to a certain extent, I still am. But I have learned that destiny has a way of making things work. In my case, I channeled that youthful energy into positive things and the reasons may not be clearly spelled out at first but comes out as a gentle realization or powerful insight at some point in time.
Why we do the things that we do can be a mystery. It comes from one’s deeply held beliefs about life, a worldview if you must, but it also involves how we react to the environment around us. That said, I believe that we are the sum of all the thoughts, feelings and experiences we’ve encountered in our personal journey and it is up to us to decide what kind of energy we radiate to the world.
Coming face-to-face with a dangerous situation elicits different reactions from people. I believe that it lit a fire inside of me to become the person I am today: an advocate of grounded optimism. And as we all have a life to live in the world and have our worldly duties to ourselves and our family but above and beyond these things, we also have a spiritual path that will lead us to the ultimate goal.
And I will end here.
Thanks for reading everyone! This is my first post here on naturalmedicine.io – my #introduceyourself post – and hopefully, not my last. I wish you all the best of health and happiness in whatever situation you are in. Let us keep the light of wisdom and compassion burning and share it with the world.
Sincerely,
