New Favorite
Yum! I think we found our new favorite dessert! It is delicious and very easy to prepare. My six year old daughter was able to do most of the job here - except for the putting-inside-the-oven part.
As a homeschooling mom, I cannot afford to spend a lot of time in the kitchen but if I can make that time a learning experience for my children, then that is a time well spent.
For this dessert, I have some "hacks" and short cuts. Hey, we can't always make everything from scratch, you know!
The Filo (Phyllo) Sheets
Living in the Middle East, one of my favorite Middle Eastern dessert is the baklava. It is made of layered filo sheets with nuts and honey. The thing is, I never really paid attention to filo sheets. I never knew how easy it would be to make dishes with it, and I didn't know that ready-made filo sheets can be easily bought from any supermarket here.
I learned about filo sheets while watching Nadiya Bakes at Netflix. She shared her filo dishes, hence I got inspired to make for my family too.
Strawberry and Cream Filo Tarts
Now for the fun part.
The dessert is only made by layering the filo sheets on a baking dish, or in this case, a muffin pan.
Cut the filo sheets into small squares. Arrange the sheets on the mold, brushing it with melted butter before putting the next layer. This is where I got help from my Little Miss. She loves helping me out in the kitchen and she loves painting too,so this is a perfect task for her. β€οΈ
Strawberry and Cream
For the strawberry, I used store-bought strawberry jam. I told you, easy! π€«π
As for the cream, here is where I am making up for the cheats. I have recently been making my own cream cheese from yogurt, so my cream here is yogurt cream cheese. Given that it is a bit tangy, I added a scoop of all purpose cream and confectioner's sugar to balance the flavor.
Put a dallop of cream cheese on the layered filo sheets, then top with strawberry jam.
Bake it for 15 minutes or until the filo sheets are light brown and crisp.
Serve and enjoy!
The tanginess from the cream cheese complemented the sweet strawberry jam so well! It was a hit! The family loved it!
I hope you enjoyed this very simple, yet delicious desert. I am still thinking of other recipes I can make with filo sheets, something savory perhaps. Any suggestions will be appreciated!
Until the next!
