Indonesia has a very diverse cuisine. Including delicious menus to eat for breakfast. In Indonesia, many people have breakfast with porridge and many also choose lontong for breakfast.
There are lots of street vendors selling these breakfast menus, so when you don't have a breakfast menu in your kitchen, we can go out and look for food for breakfast.
I ordered this dish because it has a unique name. Empal Gentong. When I saw the name of the menu, I thought 'is this food served in a barrel?' or cook this food using a barrel like the previous people did? So instead of me continuing to wonder I immediately ordered it.
It turns out that Empal Gentong is Lontong Ketupat and Beef.
Empal Gentong
Empal Gentong is a typical food from the Cirebon area, West Java. This dish is very similar to lontong Sayur, which consists of lontong (rice boiled and steamed over boiling leaves) filled with vegetables and chicken.
What distinguishes Empal Gentong and Lontong Vegetable is the filling to accompany this lontong. Empal Gentong contains intestines, tripe, and sliced beef. While the sauce is the same as vegetable rice cake, namely curry sauce.
Why is it called Empal Gentong, Previously, Empal Gentong was filled with stuffing in a cow's stomach such as lungs, intestines, liver, and others. However, now it is not always this stuffing that is used as a side dish for lontong, but only the meat. Aded gentong because this dish (gravy) was traditionally cooked in a barrel. The sauce used is the same, namely a sauce made from spices mixed with coconut milk.
Although this food is a typical food from Cirebon, this dish can be found everywhere. Because this food is an archipelago culinary that is very suitable as a breakfast and lunch menu.
I think this empal gentong is very delicious. For those who don't like vegetables, like me, this will be an alternative to still being able to enjoy lontong without vegetables.
The sauce used is also very delicious. The seasoning is also very pervasive into every slice of beef. This dish is served with crackers and sliced scallions.
For one serving of Empal Gentong, I pay IDR 30K or USD 2.10. For the price of the breakfast menu, this price is expensive. But it is quite worthy because this dish contains a very expensive ingredient, namely beef. Hehehehe
