As a Malaysian Chinese, we celebrate a lot of festivals and Mid-autumn is one of them. It is celebrated on the 15th of the 8th month of the Chinese lunar calendar. What we do is we carry lanterns in various shapes and eat mooncakes where traditional ones have the typical red bean or lotus paste with or without yolk in the middle. Usually, it is also a time for family and friends to gather to enjoy the full moon while chit chating and having mooncakes together. When I was young, I have really pleasant memories of carrying lanterns arouny my neighbour friends as we strolled around the neighbourhood. I used to lead a big group of children to play lanterns who were part of our children church. Very fond memories of the festival.
Mid-autumn or Mooncake festival is around the corner hence there is a huge variety of mooncakes out there. I guess for us to celebrate it now, it has to do with the food - the mooncakes.
Had this snowskin mooncake for snack before my class today and boy, it is brilliant! It has real musang king durian pulp in it. My mum-in-law was gifted this Love 18c Snowskin Musang King mooncakes and she brought it back with her today. I don't quite fancy snowskin mooncakes but this is very good! 😍 No one else eats durian at home so I happily can eat this slowly one by one!
I used to make some with purple sweet potato and mung bean as its filling many years ago to entertain some of my students.
Have you tried mooncakes before?
