Once again I took a Wednesday off to break up a week of stressful work. It really helps !
Last night I put in a food/grocery order to be picked up today. I really only needed a few items for this coming weekend as my Mom, brother and sisters and spouses and I will be celebrating my sister Vicky's 70th birthday. You know, every year you are gifted with really IS a privilege and we love any reason to celebrate.
While I was online ordering those things, I decided to add in a few more things just to have here. As I was looking through the pages and pages of food, I randomly ran across a frozen version of an item that my Mom made for us once in a long while when I was growing up. On a whim, I bought a little box of the frozen version.
When I was a child, my mother made the homemade version of what we called "Chipped Beef & Gravy". She would get the dried beef in a jar like the below (photo borrowed from the online Walmart grocery shopping site). She would take out the little thin rounds of dried beef and tear it up in random bits. She would then make a large pan of delicious milk gravy and when it was done, she would add the "chips" of beef and stir them together. I believe we had it as breakfast with scrambled eggs on the side and it was tasty and a nice little change from the norm.
Today though, Stouffer's made the beef and gravy.
The beef and gravy was in a thick plastic bag which per the instructions, I pierced and placed in my microwave for 7 minutes. You can also heat it in boiling water if you don't have a microwave or don't like using it for such things.
I cut a couple of slices off the french baguette I had in the frig, toasted them and cut them up so they would fit in my bowl. You don't have to toast the bread and can use any kind of bread. I'm sure when my Mom made this, it was served over warm homemade biscuits.
I poured on the hot gravy and Vwa-LA ! It was ready to eat.
I enjoyed having it for my lunch, but had forgotten that the last time I had it, probably a couple of years ago, I had found it to be a little on the salty side. Not bad enough to ruin it, but still noticeable. I guess this will be my fix and should hold me for another couple of years when I will buy it on a whim again. 😄
Hope you all have been having a good day (or evening depending on where you are).
Luv ya !
