Vegan rice milk
In my house, we prepare four kinds of milk:
- almond milk
- soya milk
- oat milk
- rice milk
Rice milk, as it's the cheapest version, is most common in everyday use. It has a natural, earthy flavor, which can be modified by adding different ingredients to it. You can add many natural flavors like vanilla or almond, you can add spices like cinnamon, honey, and even rose water. whatever you have at your disposal and whatever you like.
Remember that the "rice milk" has nothing in common with the regular milk, so the flavor will be different. It's still very tasty though.
You can use it in baking, you can make pancakes with it or eat it with cereals. I don't recommend it to the coffee - coffee works much better with almond milk.
Why drink your own rice milk?
✅ it's a great option for vegans and people with lactose intolerance
✅ it's eco-friendly. Most of the CO2 emissions in the world are related to breeding cattle for meat and dairy cattle. 1l of dairy milk produces an emission of 2,2 kg of CO2 when 1l of rice milk only 1,2 kg
✅ to produce 1l of dairy milk is required 9m2 of the land and 428 liters of water. Production of 1l rice milk takes 0,9m2 of the land and 270 liters of water.
✅ It's healthy. It contains fiber, magnesium, calcium, vitamin B6, and vitamin E.
✅ industrial milk production makes animals suffer. cows are exploited intensively and when they stop supplying enough milk they are killed.
✅ it's cheap. Sure, rice milk from the supermarket or health store can be really expensive but preparing your own milk, you don't need much money. Here, where I live, rice milk costs at the store 2,90 USD, but the cost of making it at home is as low as... 0,15 USD!
✅ making your own milk, you can be sure it doesn't have any artificial preservatives, flavor enhancers and other artificial ingredients that may be unhealthy
✅ it's a joy to make your own food. It gives a lot of satisfaction
Ingredients for +/- 700 ml of milk:
🟢 1 cup of any rice
🟢 1 liter of water
🟢 A bit of salt
🟢 (optional) sugar, honey, natural aromas or spices you like
1️⃣
Boil the water and let it cool.
Put the rice in a bowl, add water and leave it at least for 8-10 hours. I always make this step day before, before going to sleep. The next morning I continue preparing milk.
2️⃣
After 8-10 hours (or more), add a pinch of salt and your favorite flavors. I usually add 1 spoon of honey and few drops of natural vanilla extract but I was trying also to make the milk with rose water and it tasted amazing as well.
3️⃣
Blend all the ingredients together as precisely as it's possible. Milk should change the color for white (or light brown if you use brown rice).
4️⃣
Filter milk to the bottle, use triple folded gauze. Milk shouldn't contain rice, just the liquid.
5️⃣
Keep it in the fridge, in the closed glass bottle.
Each time before using, shake the bottle.
Milk expires in 3 days.
