A friend of mine was in town last week and wanted to take me out to lunch. He said he had found a roast beef place he wanted to try so off we went.
It wasn't until we arrived that I knew what we were in for, delicious A4 roast beef in the shape of Mt. Fuji.
Now if this were the states I wouldn't eat that raw egg for fear of salmonella, but here in Japan I have no such fears. Eating raw eggs with beef is fairly common, especially with the popular sukiyaki. It did take me about 1 year to get over my fears though.
This lunch set comes in two varieties, regular roast beef for about $12 or wagyu A4 roast beef for $19. Both are the same with rice, cabbage, mayonnaise, raw egg and onion soup. Since I am on a holidays budget I just got the regular kind. My friend however got the wagyu and I envied every bite we took. Mine was delicious and what I would expect from a good, normal roast beef. Definitely worth the price. My friend commented how his was fantastic though so I'm thinking I'll have to take my wife back to get the wagyu version.
I will say that for $12, the price of Wendy's or Carl's Jr. back in California, this lunch was light years ahead in flavor and nutrition.
The name of the restaurant is Roastbeef Ohno. This location was in Ikebukuro, right next to the station, but they are a chain restaurant with additional locations in Harajuku and Kanda.
They offer menu's in English so even if you can't speak Japanese you will be fine ordering and eating here.
