I swear, it been raining non-stop for weeks!! Ok, fine… a day here and a day there we get a break. Eastern Washington never gets this amount of rain at this time of year. A guy at work said he got over 3 inches of rain from Thursday to Sunday… it’s Monday and it basically rained all day.
With few sunny days between the rain I was really surprised that our strawberry box was pumping out strawberries like crazy! This box is a mess and needs thinned out really bad.
Despite the neglect, the strawberries are coming on strong. The first little harvest wasn’t much. They disappeared really fast. Dang kids…
I waited a couple days before I went out and gathered up some more. I scored a break in the rain and got to picking. Sifting through the overgrowth of strawberries, digging my way in to find those ripe berries. I must not have built these planter boxes tall enough… my back was getting tight and starting to hurt by the end of picking. Hmmm
… maybe I’m just getting old??… NAH!! I was just there for a long time picking all these strawberries
After washing them and getting the greens off of them I put them in a bowl and planned on just tossing in the refrigerator.
What the…
Then my curiosity got me… how much do these strawberries weigh?? It feels like some serious poundage! Let’s give these guys a weigh and see how many pounds we got… first I needed to find my scale. Then I placed the bowl on it and and hit tare. This zeroes out the scale. Then filled the bowl up with strawberries.
2 pounds 14.5 ounces
That’s a nice haul if I do say so myself. :wink:wink Now I have a feeling if I just stuck them in the fridge they would disappear in a couple days. So this round of berry picking is gonna get vacuumed sealed and thrown in the freezer for smoothies.
I found the easiest way is to lay them all out on a cookie sheet and toss them in my standup freezer in the garage. Give them 24hrs or so to freeze completely then bag them up.
Whip out the ol’ vacuum sealer and suck all the air out of them.
Then back in the freezer they go. Nearly 3lbs of strawberries waiting for their day in the blender. Tasty smoothies coming right up!
I imagine here in the next month or two our Marion BlackBerry bush will be going crazy. I chopped it down to nothing thing and it already has shoots that are 5-6 feet long. It’s gonna be Berry-Madness at the Splatts house this year.
