Hello Foodies.
We have started to prepare for the winter season slowly. As Turkish women, we have traditions that have been going on for years. One of them is to prepare homemade recipes to be consumed throughout the summer and in the winter. Preparations are made for handmade pastas, phyllo dough, drinks, jams, pickles, and many foods and beverages that I can't count. In the past, the snow season was very difficult. Therefore, the food and drinks prepared for the winter ran out. This habit still continues today. Winter preparations continue in many rural areas. Just like the story of the cicada and the ant in our childhood. We are the ant there.
To prepare for the winter, we first started with the drinks. Today, my mother and I gathered plums from the plum tree in our garden. At first they were green in color, we did not touch them. We waited for them to blush with the sun. That way it would be sweeter. If you have a plum tree in your garden and don't know what to do with them, this article is for you. Today we will make plum juice from plums. Your kids will love this completely homemade drink. You may be wondering if there is any fruit juice from plum, but believe me, it is very good. I love the sour taste very, very much.
Let me talk about the materials first;
Plum
Granulated sugar
Water
Tools ;
Glass Jar
Jar Lid (new)
Filter
Deep Pot
Ladle
We washed the plums we picked from our garden well and then drained them. We add the plums to a deep saucepan.
Fill the pot with water until it covers the top of the plums.Then turn on the stove and cook until it boils. Continue until the plums are split in the middle with a line. It will not be completely split in half. It will only slightly swell and have a cut mark on the edge.
When the plums are cooked, we need to add the sugars. This amount completely depends on your taste. We added 7-8 tablespoons of sugar. You can add less or more sugar. It's totally up to you. After boiling for another 5 minutes, we perform the filtration process.
Be careful not to burn our hands while straining. Place the strainer over a deep bowl and slowly start straining the plums.
While straining, gently press the plums with a spoon to help add its flavor to the water. Don't press too hard. If you press it, the pieces of the plums will mix with the water, so you get a sedimented juice. Some people like light pieces, if you are, you can press it, but if you just want a water consistency, do not crush the plums too much.
Let's put the filtered plum juice back on the stove. Let it stand on the stove until it starts to boil.
It's time to add the boiling plum juices to the bottles. We filled the bottles to the brim with the help of a deep scoop.
Make sure the jar lids are new. Since it was hot, we closed the jar tightly with the help of a cloth. We put it upside down on a tray.
The reason why we put the bottles upside down when hot is so that the caps close tightly. Thus, it will stay intact for a long time without leaking air. We will consume them in winter, so we pay attention to this.
To see if the caps are ok. We hold the jar, whose lid we tightened, upside down in the sink. If the lid is not secure, you will hear a hissing sound. That's how the sound came from our cover. We then checked to see if the lids were inflated. Unfortunately this cover was not good. We changed it right away.
We got a total of 5 liters of plum juice. This is how we finished the second of our winter drink. Maybe new ones can be added to these fruit juices in the future. Around here, the plums are still browning.
Don't you think the colors are great?
