This meal was one of the best meals and I have in quite some time! Now, I'm a huge hamburger guy, I could give Whimpy a run for his money.
But, those juicy burgers that I was in charge of grilling were not the reason for our excitement. It was not the fact that my beautiful bride had all of the fixings that perfectly compliment a good burger, corn on the cob that was still as good as the day we blanched it and put it into the deep freezer. No, it was not the home-made coleslaw or a favorite of every true-blooded American, Mac and cheese made with that delicious but not very healthy Velveeta cheese.
What was going to make this meal so special was the fact we would be having diner guests!
Our son and his family would be sitting down to share this meal with us.
Not only would we be sharing tonight's meal, but we would also be enjoying each other's company for the next several days.
After playing hoops outside while it was gently snowing and doing dribbling drills in the kitchen earlier in the day, the activities were just beginning. By 5:00 PM we had built a fort, had very competitive bicycle races, blocked up the stream with rocks to form a pool, read books, and ventured out into the woods on the 4wheelers.
Despite being just slightly exhausted, I had promised to take a hike with my grandchildren, and
. I figured I might as well build up a good appetite, so off we went.
An hour later we returned and we were all famished, but I still needed to grill the burgers and some chicken.
Before the grill was even heated up, Grandma had the food flowing.
I apologize for this blurry picture, but they couldn't even stop shoveling it in for a minute to pose for the photo.
Since I'd be outside doing what real men do, grill, I was praying they'd be leaving a few scraps for Pop.
Boy that corn looked good. I would not take a chance of missing out on the corn and ate two pieces on the run.
Just before cooking, a little hail decided to fall from the sky.
With the grill preheated to the perfect temp, you know the temp that leaves those beautiful grill marks on the food, it was time to get busy.
While the grill was preheating, the burgers were being snowflake tenderized. That's how we roll up here at the farm.
This is the last picture of this meal you will see. Once the food was perfectly cooked, I dropped the camera and pounded down enough burgers to make Whimpy jealous. The fries were gone, the mac and cheese was depleted, the bowl of slaw had a small helping left at the bottom, but I had some corn.
With this being the situation, everyone's appetite had wained and I was now in THE CAT BIRD'S SEAT.
The burgers and chicken were mostly all mine.
Following diner, it was time to get my game face on. I had been challenged to a game of chess and I was looking to put a few W in the win column. It would take complete concentration to defeat this little bugger, or was I just TOTALLY OUT OF GAS.
What an absolutely great day, and I had better get to bed. Tomorrow is another day and the little rug rats already got days itinerary planned out.
I can't wait until tomorrow.
Despite all that is happening we all still need to carry on with life.
We had been planning this visit for some time now. With our daughter inlaw being a third-grade teacher, this is her spring break, and the children's break also.
They have played by the rules since March 15th, isolating themselves from harm, and we have done the same.
After many phone calls back and forth prior to their arrival, we all decided that the risk was small and we just needed to spend some time together as a family. The farm would be the perfect place to gather, and it would not require any social distancing. The 1st thing #farm-mom and I did was to hug our grandkids.
