From an Old Crack to a Usable Corner / Vom alten Riss zur nutzbaren Ecke

After the first repair work on the old crack behind the Styrofoam, the corner of my garage is finally starting to look useful again. In the first part, it was mainly about the surprise itself. An old crack had been hidden behind Styrofoam panels for many years. At first sight, it looked worse than expected, but since I have rented this garage for more than fourteen years and nothing had visibly changed during that time, I see it as an old and inactive damage.

Nach den ersten Reparaturarbeiten am alten Riss hinter dem Styropor sieht diese Ecke meiner Garage endlich wieder nutzbar aus. Im ersten Teil ging es vor allem um die Überraschung selbst. Hinter den Styroporplatten kam ein alter Riss zum Vorschein, der dort offenbar viele Jahre verborgen war. Auf den ersten Blick sah das schlimmer aus als erwartet, aber da ich diese Garage seit über vierzehn Jahren miete und sich in dieser Zeit sichtbar nichts verändert hat, gehe ich von einem alten und ruhenden Schaden aus.

I removed the loose material, filled the deeper gaps with rapid concrete and then worked with repair mortar and reinforcement mesh. It was not about creating a perfect wall. It was about closing the damaged area properly instead of hiding it again.

Ich habe alles lose Material entfernt, die tieferen Fugen mit Blitzbeton gefüllt und danach mit Reparaturmörtel und Armierungsgewebe weitergearbeitet. Es ging nicht darum, eine perfekte Wand zu schaffen. Es ging darum, die beschädigte Stelle ordentlich zu schließen, statt sie wieder einfach zu verstecken.

The next step was to make the area practical again. Above the repaired section, I mounted a white Kallax shelf from IKEA. For the mounting, I used brackets that I printed myself from PETG. That is exactly one of those moments where 3D printing becomes really useful. Not as decoration, not as a showpiece, but as a practical solution for a real problem.

Der nächste Schritt war, diese Ecke wieder praktisch nutzbar zu machen. Über der reparierten Stelle habe ich ein weißes Kallax-Regal von IKEA montiert. Für die Befestigung habe ich Halterungen verwendet, die ich selbst aus PETG gedruckt habe. Genau in solchen Momenten zeigt sich für mich, wie nützlich 3D-Druck sein kann. Nicht als Dekoration, nicht als Vorzeigeobjekt, sondern als praktische Lösung für ein echtes Problem.

The shelf now gives this corner a purpose again. Where there was previously a hidden crack and an ugly damaged area, there is now storage space. For a garage, that is already a big improvement. Tools, small parts, cables and chargers always need a place, and every bit of order helps.

Das Regal gibt dieser Ecke nun wieder einen Zweck. Wo vorher ein versteckter Riss und eine unschöne Schadstelle waren, entsteht nun wieder Stauraum. Für eine Garage ist das schon ein großer Fortschritt. Werkzeug, Kleinteile, Kabel und Ladegeräte brauchen immer ihren Platz, und jedes bisschen Ordnung hilft.

Not Finished Yet / Noch nicht ganz fertig

Completely finished is this corner not yet. Under the Kallax shelf, I still want to add an OSB board. There I would like to create a few more shelves for my tools and also for the batteries of my devices. Especially the batteries and chargers should not just lie around somewhere in the garage. They need a fixed place where I can find them quickly.

Ganz fertig ist diese Ecke aber noch nicht. Unter das Kallax-Regal soll noch eine OSB-Platte kommen. Dort möchte ich noch ein paar Ablagen für mein Werkzeug und auch für die Akkus meiner Geräte schaffen. Gerade die Akkus und Ladegeräte sollen nicht irgendwo in der Garage herumliegen. Sie brauchen einen festen Platz, an dem ich sie schnell wiederfinde.

But this next step has to wait. During the work, my shoulder reminded me clearly that I should not overdo it. I have already been out of action because of this injury, and I do not want to risk that again. So I will stop here for the moment and give my shoulder the rest it needs.

Aber dieser nächste Schritt muss erst einmal warten. Bei der Arbeit hat sich meine Schulter deutlich gemeldet und mir gezeigt, dass ich es nicht übertreiben sollte. Ich war wegen dieser Verletzung schon einmal außer Gefecht gesetzt, und genau das möchte ich nicht noch einmal riskieren. Deshalb höre ich an dieser Stelle erst einmal auf und gönne meiner Schulter die Ruhe, die sie braucht.

The Main Point / Der eigentliche Punkt

For me, this small project is not about perfection. It is about dealing honestly with an old problem. The crack was hidden for years. Now it is visible, repaired and the area is useful again. That feels much better than simply putting another panel in front of it and pretending nothing was there.

Für mich geht es bei diesem kleinen Projekt nicht um Perfektion. Es geht darum, ehrlich mit einem alten Problem umzugehen. Der Riss war jahrelang versteckt. Jetzt ist er freigelegt, repariert und die Stelle wieder nutzbar. Das fühlt sich deutlich besser an, als einfach wieder eine Platte davorzusetzen und so zu tun, als wäre nichts gewesen.

Of course, this is not a professional construction guide. It is only my personal experience with an old garage wall. If someone finds a fresh crack or a crack that continues to grow, a professional should look at it. In my case, the damage was old, unchanged for many years and therefore suitable for this kind of repair.

Natürlich ist das keine professionelle Bauanleitung. Es ist nur meine persönliche Erfahrung mit einer alten Garagenwand. Wenn jemand einen frischen Riss findet oder einen Riss, der weiter wächst, sollte ein Fachmann darauf schauen. In meinem Fall war der Schaden alt, über viele Jahre unverändert und deshalb für diese Art der Reparatur geeignet.

Now this corner is no longer just the place where I found an unpleasant surprise. It is slowly becoming a useful part of my garage again. The wall is repaired, the Kallax shelf is mounted, the PETG brackets are doing their job and the OSB board will follow later, when my shoulder allows it.

Jetzt ist diese Ecke nicht mehr nur die Stelle, an der ich eine unangenehme Überraschung gefunden habe. Sie wird langsam wieder ein nützlicher Teil meiner Garage. Die Wand ist repariert, das Kallax-Regal hängt, die PETG-Halterungen erfüllen ihren Zweck und die OSB-Platte folgt später, wenn meine Schulter es wieder zulässt.
