Clue is a 1985 movie based on the popular Hasbro board game.
Making a board game movie into a adult style dramatic comedy seems like a horrible idea, but the movie is excellent. It has an all star cast and is well directed. The low level lighting and professional camera shots gives this movie a very spooky feel.
This movie has a real "house on the hill" vibe, like an old Dracula film. The first few scenes of the movie are actually pretty frightening. The movie retains it's stunning cinematography, even when the jokes and slapstick start rolling in. This movie is the perfect dramatic comedy.
This movie has an all star cast. We are first introduced to Tim Curry's character [the butler]. We also meet the sexy maid and the overweight, but highly professional female chief. We meet all the rest of the characters as they arrive. Every character gets a nickname except the chief and the maid [the maid and chief aren't being blackmailed so they don't get names].
Colonel Mustard is played by Martin Mull.
Mrs. White is played by Madeline Kahn.
Mrs. Peacock is played by Eileen Brennanis.
Professor Plum is played by Christopher Lloyd.
Mr. Green is played by Michael McKean.
Miss Scarlet is played by Lesley Ann Warren.
Like any good "who done it" movie, the plot is revealed early. Mr Boddy [Lee Ving] is a blackmailer who has been blackmailing all the guests. The butler tried to trick Mr. Boddy by locking all the doors and calling the police. Mr. Boddy brought presents for all the blackmailers which everyone thought was evidence, but really were murder weapons. Mr Boddy tells everyone all they have to do is kill the butler and nothing will go public. He flips on the lights, but instead of killing the butler, someone kills Mr. Body the blackmailer.
This movie is full of slapstick and VERY DRY humor. Running into rooms like Scooby Doo, 3 Stooges style slaps to the face, poop jokes, sex humor. There is even a scene with a "who's on first base" spinoff. There are eye pokes and kicks to the crotch. The cross between a darkly lit, spooky movie and dry humor make this a great dramatic comedy. Overall I would give this movie an 8/10.
The movie has three different endings. Each ending has very clever writing that makes you want to watch the movie all over again. Each ending has a different twist and killer. Different theaters showed different endings. The Dvd/Television versions shows all three endings.
