A lover of Viking movies, I immediately hopped into seeing this movie and it displayed a lot about the tradition of the vikings.
The Northman.
King Aurvandill also known as the war Raven comes home after numerous victories and joins his wife, Queen Gudrún along side his little prince Amleth who is heir apparent to the throne. As tradition demands Amleth needs to be prepared to take his place as king someday, his father took him to Heimir, both Amleth and his father took part in the preparation. The following morning, Amleth and his father was attacked by his brother fjölnir and his men, fjölnir killed his brother by heading him, him and his men headed straight to the village, killed everyone and took Amleth's mom, Amleth had run for his life, Amleth vowed to avenge his father and rescue his mother.

Some vikings found little Amleth, they took him in and raised him to be one of them, Amleth became a weapon and a good warrior. Amleth and his squad of vikings attacked the land of Rus and conquers the city, taking the people as slaves, on the land of Rus Amleth comes across a sorceress who reminds him about his revenge and how his future is mixed up with a maiden king. From a fellow warrior, Amleth was made to know that fjölnir was chased out of the kingdom by Harald of Norway and is now based in Iceland. Amleth joins fjölnir's slave on a ship sailing to Iceland, Amleth meets a slave by the name Olga on the boat. He and the other slaves were guarded to fjölnir, Amleth found out his mom who fjölnir took now has a son (Gunnar) with fjölnir.

Amleth left the farm in search of a wizard who helped him in communicating with late Heimir, Heimir was killed by fjölnir. Heimir discloses to Amleth about a magical sword called draugar which can only be unsheathed at night or at the gates of Hel. Amleth left in search of the sword, the sword is owned by a mound dweller, after fighting the mound dweller he gains access to the sword. Amleth was picked to participate in a game of knttleikr with slaves from another farm as opponents, the game became bloody and Gunnar ran into the pitch to help them win and at same time he almost got killed, he was saved by Amleth. Amleth was rewarded for saving the life of Gunnar, he will know lead the slaves and is allowed to take any woman of his choice.
At night the people celebrate their victory from the game, Amleth cease the opportunity to see his mother who makes him know that she was initially a slave before his father raped her and she gave birth to him. She opened up to Amleth how she pleaded with fjölnir to eliminate his father alongside him, she says she prefers her new family. In anger Amleth left his mother's room, on his way out he kills Thorir in his sleep and takes his heart with him.
Amleth's true identity was revealed by his mother to fjölnir, he was caught and Olga managed to rescue him, he gave up avenging his father and wanted to flee Iceland when he had a vision that Olga is carrying his twin babies, his children will never be safe while his uncle is still alive, Amleth heads back to the farm to finish what he started.
Amleth grants freedom to all of fjölnir's slaves, Amleth steps into the room and was attacked by his mother, he kills her alongside her son Gunnar. Fjölnir steps and carries the dead bodies asking Amleth to meet him at the gates of Hel, at the gate of Hel Amleth beheads his uncle and his uncle stabs him in the chest.
The darkness in the movie was too much, tho the movie was quite interesting.
