Who is this film genius? Julian Fellowes is one of my favourite writer/director/producer, much more so with the excellent performance and high ratings of Downton Abbey on the screen.
Downton Abbey, an English period drama, ran as a television series for seven seasons and after protests from fans (myself included), a Downton Abbey movie was released in 2019. A sequel to this movie will be released on 18th March 2022. I watched all seven seasons and the movie and look forward with delight to the sequel.
Apart from Downton Abbey, English period drama lovers are excited about the release of the much anticipated followup to Downton Abbey —The Gilded Age, written, directed and produced by Julian Fellows.
This new series is a prequel to Downton Abbey and will be set in the late 19th century, 1882 precisely, during the American Gilded Age, a period of huge economic boom.
For those who do not know, the Gilded Age refers to prosperous years in American history after the Civil War. This was a time when the country experienced tremendous economic growth and the wealthy made money at the expense of the working class.
This new show will feature an all-star cast including Christine Baranski and Cynthia Nixon. Some of the actors and actresses from Downton Abbey will be represented by younger versions of themselves in this series.
As a lover of English period drama, I am looking forward to the start of this new show with much anticipation. This show will premiere on HBO January 24th, 2022 in the US.
It is believed that this upcoming series will be a Downton Abbey 2.0, that is, an even better series. Julian Fellowes and the production team have been working on this series since January 2016. This means a lot of thought and work has gone into this series. According to Fellowes,"someone will accuse me of that anyway, so I don't think I'll let it hold me up much." He is quite confident of the series' worldwide reception.
This new series is described by Deadline as 'a sweeping fictional epic of the millionaire titans of New York City.'
I can't wait!
