Do you know what's crazy about reviewing a movie? Many people jump into it without being mindful of the fact that the reviews they write for a movie can go a long way in affecting the overall rating of that film.
Perhaps, you really don't care about how the film is rated and you don't care about the effort made by the actors or backroom staff, but, at the very least, you should take note of the fact that some people's choice of watching a movie or not can also be based on the reviews you give a movie.
Cinephiles, I'm looking forward to this discussion because I know many people in this community have found themselves in a situation where they have to check the reviews a movie has and the rating of that movie before going ahead to add it to their watchlist.
I'm also that kinda person. I don't joke with the reviews and ratings given to a series...
...but you would be mistaken to think I only make my choice based on those reviews. I go far and beyond in my research.
This is probably why I hardly watch 'movies' rather I choose to stick with series. Haha. Because I spend so much time digging around the plot, the characterisation, the scriptwriter(s) and his (their) track record in the industry, different directors that were part of the movie making and a whole lot of other stuff that beats the imagination of a casual cinephile.
The no-brainer in writing movie reviews is to (at the very least) watch the movie.
This isn't the hardest thing to do and I genuinely think it will be insane to review and rate a movie when you've not watched it.
Do you know what's even crazier? Why do you convince people to not watch a movie when you also didn't watch it? Haha. How do y'all do that? You must have some psychic powers that I don't know of.
What about writing a review when you are halfway through a movie?
I've seen a situation where people write reviews halfway through a movie or when they are just starting the movie. This can be a tricky one but it depends on what you are reviewing.
Like I said earlier, I watch series and a lot of them run into 50 episodes, usually released 2 episodes per week. Under normal circumstances, I like to wait till the full release before watching it but once in a while, I dive in from the start and watch it based on its weekly release date.
Here is an example of one such series I'm following at the moment.
The 11th and 12th episodes will be released this weekend, Saturday and Sunday at 16:00 GMT. If you watch these kinda films and feel like writing a review based on each episode you've seen so far, there won't be an issue with that.
But if we are talking about some other movies that run for 120 minutes or thereabout, just sit your ass down and watch the damn movie before writing a review. Haha.
Every other stuff follows
I believe Google does a good job of giving you key things to take note of while reviewing a movie.
You can talk about the acting and the ability of each actor to portray their character. If you like, you can rate each actor based on his/her acting.
Rate the storyline. Was the plot smooth and good to your taste? Did they have nice old twists? Was the story dragged on for way too long? Was it boring?
You probably know this stuff more than I do so, have a blast in it and try to keep the spoilers to yourself. Nobody likes that.
Do you know you can look stupid while reviewing a movie?
Here is why;
I know for a fact that I will be feeling grumpy and probably fall sick if I'm ever made to watch some third-rated, childish and cheap romance. That is a mismatch to the genre I watch.
I prefer to watch Action, crime, mystery, business, medical, law-related and historical sword-fighting Kdramas. Surely, it has to be Kdrama for a start and it will have action as one of the genres. If romance comes in, I won't mind but I can't just go searching for something that is all about romance.
For the most part, that will be like looking for kimchi in a boutique. To put this into context, check this out;
This is in the Romance genre. This Kdrama of 16 episodes got a very high rating on many platforms. Like, I was genuinely curious to know what's so special about this. These are the ratings.
It's very rare for me to start a series without watching it till the end, but this was an exception to that. I just can't force that on myself. This was so boring and very annoying. Haha.
I tried as much as possible to not write a review of this anywhere. I also didn't rate it anywhere because I know it's my fault for trying to watch something that is outside my league. But if I'm ever to rate this, 4/10 will be the most generous rating I can give it.
You see where I'm going with this, right?
Here is the conclusion
Writing a review starts even before you watch a movie. Money Heist was a massive hit. Squid game took the world by surprise.
If you go on to write a review on these movies just because it's a trend and the world are talking about it, you will most likely make a joke of yourself.
For those that write their movie reviews based on a combination of reviews given by other people instead of watching the movie to know what you are reviewing; What are you on?
God help y'all 😂.
